A couple of girlfriends and I wanted to participate in a local mother/son dance with a superhero theme, but when we tried to sign up we found out that it was sold out. So...we decided to have our own "super" night out.
I borrowed a costume for Kellan and pieced together an outfit for myself off the clearance rack at Walmart. The cost of being amazing? $9.00!
Dynamic Duo!
We started our evening with dinner at Red Robin and then ended up at Brunswick Zone to play laser tag. I thought we would get a lot of weird stares while we were out, but what we got instead was so much better. Nearly everyone we ran across stopped to ask us what we were doing: Were we part of a birthday party? Had we been to a theme event? Was this a special occasion?
The city is safe tonight!
When they found out we were dressed up "just for the fun of it" their reactions were even better. Everyone oohed and ahhed over the boys and exclaimed, "That's awesome!" or "What a good idea!" Some people even admitted a bit of envy. What it made me realize was how little time many of us spend on having fun. Most of my days are filled with so much worry and rushing and obligation that having fun is usually the last thing on my mind, even though it's probably the main thing that I - and my kids - need. It was fun to wear a costume. It was fun being surrounded by the conversation of four little boys. It was fun to spend time with Kellan without the distraction of 4 other siblings.
Don't mess with the best!!
None of us had ever played laser tag before and as we ran around in the semi dark, wielding flashing weapons and chasing our giggling boys, we found ourselves laughing just as hard. It felt good. Exhilarating. Euphoric. Powerful.
Exactly what it must feel like to be a superhero.
