Singing a song of angry men..

The weekend sees United face Liverpool for the first time since the FA banned Luis Suarez for the use of racial language. The report into the matter was even more damming than I thought it would be, it made my previous post about it a load of nonsense. I think Liverpool, with their statements and t-shirts, made the situation a whole lot worse and that is what angered United fans most of all. With a bit of contrition Liverpool might have been awarded the benefit of the doubt. The FA Cup has a twisted sense of humour putting all the clubs that are/were involved in a race row together. I'm quite pleased that it seems to be quiet press wise regarding this match, I don't think I could cope with the pressure building. At first I didn't think Evra should play but that sends out such a bad message that if fit, he has to. I'm sure he has the character to cope with the abuse he will no doubt face. I hope United fans take heed of Ferguson's message to concentrate on supporting the team, support instead of attack. I think United handled the whole situation well, let's not spoil that. It's up to the Liverpool fans at the match if they want to improve the image of their club or not. I'm not holding much hope (for either set of fans behaving), for once in my life I'm thinking it might be a good thing I can only watch the first half as fan idiocy is something I have little time for. A few weeks back I was debating not watching at all.

1,2,3,4 I declare a cyber war... I think the world screamed the day Megaupload fell. Sadly, it was only a matter of time. The big companies still don't know how to best utilize the internet and instead of moving with the times, they're digging their heals further and further in. They're holding on tight to what is quickly becoming an outdated business model. The majority of people don't download because it's free, it's usually because something is either not available for up to a year later or not available at all. The majority of things downloaded are probably things that a person wouldn't have ever bought in the first place.

There are things I wouldn't be into were it not for the sharing and creative nature of the internet, I doubt I'd have heard much of Raul Esparza so that'd be less money spent on CDs. If I hadn't seen so much fanfiction about Supernatural maybe I wouldn't have checked the show out one night (or maybe I would have done sooner had it not been for my initial confusion over the incestuous nature of such fanfiction..), so I wouldn't be saving to buy the complete boxset. Wouldn't be watching or talking about Community or White Collar. Take away the so called illegal file sharing, you take away a valuable advertising tool. Person A shares a song by Band B with Person C. B releases an album and announces a tour, C having liked the song buys the album and purchases a ticket to see Band B live. Had A not shared the file, Person C might never have heard of Band B. While I don't know how heavily the proposed laws would be enforced, they would make Company D able to sue Person A for breach of copyright. You might think 'how would Company D know?' well because, at least in the first draft of ACTA, Internet Service Providers would be required to monitor Person A's internet usage . I have seen text to suggest that part of the agreement has been taken out but given the secretive nature of the proceedings who's to know?

No-one is saying that downloading movies/music illegally isn't wrong, I understand the desire to address that but SOPA/PIPA/ACTA etc are such a blanket laws/trade agreements that it targets every aspect of copyright theft, it doesn't have to be directly either even just linking to something could land you in trouble. It's too vague, would attentions just be on the movie/music/television downloads? or would posting a picture of Mickey Mouse land someone in jail? that probably wouldn't happen but it's scary to think there are laws that make it possible. That's if the thought of your internet provider monitoring everything you do online or border control searching your ipod for copyrighted material isn't scary enough.

So how do you stop people from obtaining things illegally? By making it available legally. Have television shows available for download around the world at the same time, put adverts in them. The same could be done with movies. It only takes a bit of thought. Why should we be punished for Hollywood's refusal to adapt?

Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring when tomorrow comes!
