It's hard not to try and compare this to Band of Brothers, the production values are obviously the same but I think that's where the similarities end. In some ways this was easier to follow than BoB, as it followed just three marines but it was also less character based so there were some characters I hadn't quite put names to faces (whereas BoB had so many characters that it was hard to keep up). Reason being the resources they had to go on, they had less to work with for The Pacific.
This focused more on the war while also showing the journey from enlisting to after the war, showing what effect war can have on a person. It was brutal, the battle scenes were intense. It really made me think about the capability of man, with the Marines facing all that they did in such awful conditions and then the Japanese who were so dedicated to their cause. I watched ten episodes in a short amount of time and was spellbound again, as I was with BoB. I was in such a daze after the final one and bought one of the books the series was based on. It's important shows like this are made.
Dean: When crap like this comes around, we deal with it. Like we always have. What we don't do is, we don't go and make another deal with the devil.
Castiel: It sounds so simple when you say it like that. Where were you when I needed to hear it?
Dean: I was there. Where were you?
I'm so glad they gave Castiel an episode, I read somewhere that Misha asked that Cas not go suddenly evil a la Ruby and it's turned out to be my favourite of the whole season. I'll expand more in my season review but I wish they had explored the relationship between the boys and their angel more throughout the season.
The interaction between Cas and Dean is what really interested me. Dean has been quite the dick towards Cas all season, rarely sympathetic to Cas' war or needs. Every time Cas went to him for help, Dean rolled his eyes (Castiel: "Ofcourse, your problems always come first"). This episode has been the only time we've seen Dean acknowledge all Cas has done for him. I really wanted Castiel to call him on it a bit more, which he did in the following episode.
Castiel: I do everything that you ask, I always come when you call and I am your friend..still, despite your lack of faith in me and now your threats. I just saved you, yet again. Has anyone but your closest kin ever done more for you? All I ask is this one thing.
Dean: Trust your plan to pop purgatory?
Castiel: I've earned that Dean. [..] Stand behind me, the one time I ask.
Had Castiel gone to Dean at the beginning I'm not so sure Dean would have helped, I'm of the feeling that only Sam could have brought him out of that life. By the time Cas asked, he was already in too deep. Castiel asked God for a sign, not really considering that maybe Dean telling him to stop was that sign. I know where Castiel ultimately ends up but don't know how. I just found it sad watching the destruction of the "profound bond" and not really knowing what side to be on.
- Enjoyed the last two episodes of Chuck, part of me feels it would have been a great point to end the show but I can't wait to see Morgan: The Intersect
- Don't really know what happened to Lie to Me during it's mid-season break but it's been poor upon it's return. Cancellation not a surprise on this evidence. Will miss Tim Roth but the show lost it's charm.
- Same goes for Sanctuary. Very poor. I'll stick with it until the end of the season but probably won't continue onto the next.
- Started Falling Skies, nothing great but I found the family dynamic of it interesting. Plus, Noah Wyle.
- Very impressed HIMYM landed John Lithgow. The scene in which Barney confronted him was awesome.
