Hmm, I decided to watch Star Trek Into Darkness to see if it held up any better - I'd spent much of my time in the theatre actively annoyed at the stealing from Wrath of Khan. It actually is much worse without the distraction of anger, because this time around I was able to notice even more plotholes and clunky writing. It seemed like the movie went out of its way to mention plot details, only forget them later on, but again in such an obvious way that I suspect they noticed but thought momentum and lots of explosions would carry them through. The movie doesn't even resolve the emotional arc they'd set up for Kirk at the beginning - that he's arrogant and doesn't see any consequences for his actions. In the end there are a lot of losses, but for Kirk the sacrifices don't register, he gets a reset. In WoK, Kirk suffers but more importantly he uses what he learns from these defeats to beat Khan. Here Kirk doesn't even deal with Khan in the end, his time is spent reacting. At times with all the running, jumping, and unnecessarily complicated machinery I felt like I was watching a version of Galaxy Quest where no one realized it was a parody. And I loved the first JJ Abrams' Trek! I just can't believe what a mess this movie turned out to be.
