Wednesday Reading

Feb 26, 2014 17:15

On an actual Wednesday no less! I am on top of things and in control of my life!

What did you just finish reading?

Finally finished Screenwriting 101 by Film Crit Hulk. I enjoy Hulk's film criticism - even if his all caps SMASH style is hard on the eyes - so I picked up his e-book. It wisely has a normal font and punctuation option. This was a nice read, with a lot of discussion of film structure and writing. While I agreed with and appreciated a lot of what Hulk was saying, I found the lack of concrete examples made it hard to engage with it more fully. It came off as more like an extended (sometimes far too long an extension) series of rants and columns. I think some better editing could have helped a lot.

What are you currently reading?

I'm really liking Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith. It's a YA novel about a 16 year old boy in a dying American small town who may be involved in accidentally unleashing an apocalyptic plague. It sounds like a million other YA apocalyptic books except the writing here is fantastic. Young Austin is obsessed with history and sex and where he fits in in the world. There are all sorts of digressions into the history of his town and his ancestors that on occasion feel very Vonnegut-esque. I'm about halfway through and I'd be perfectly happy if the looming disaster is just waved away so we can focus entirely on Austin's coming of age story.
