We had the dysfunctional family Christmas. My grandma on my dad's side used to want people to stop by her house at about 2 on Christmas Eve. They are all very much anxious people. I remember the ritual of riding to grandma's -- then riding past if there was a car in the driveway. "There's too many people there. We'll stop back later." The only time we stopped was if no one else was there. Then when the next group showed up, it was our cue to leave.

What a bunch of weirdos! Er, that was me six months ago! *gasp*

Dinner there was potato salad (with real potatoes and oh-so-many onions, big o' ham, fresh bread and buns (no breadmakers), etc... etc... Gifts for the kids were socks.

On my mom's side, they quite loved the get togethers. My grandma would ask everyone to stop by at 3 on Christmas. My uncles -- big drinkers -- would show up at noon and start boozing. We'd get there at 4 (my dad would drive around and try the "too many people" routine until my mom said enough!) and have a good ol' time with everyone ( ... )

Y'know, I'm glad you posted this. It allowed me to reminisce. My family was an odd lot, but they sure have offered me many fun memories.

Amen, brother - mine as well. I think it's good we take a few minutes now and then to try and remember the good stuff from the past - hopefully, it will help guide us through the future, and allow us to avoid repeating some of the bad stuff.

Happy holidays to you and yours, sir!

And the same to you, Tiny Huck! Merry Xmas, everyone!

Thanks for asking! When my grandparents (maternal) were alive we would all go to their house for Christmas Eve. Aunts, uncles, cousins, many times friends would tag along. There would be a potluck when the GPs got older and GM didn't cook anymore. It would be a total mish mosh of foods. Then there would be carol singing (or rather, total dismantling of carols as there isn't a one who could carry a tune!) and then finally (the kids would be DYING by this point) time to open prezzies! There were a lot of cousins and a lot of gifties! As the 2nd generation of kids came into the picture, and we were a LOT older, these new moms would force the time issue! Prezzies started earlier and earlier every year after that. But the wild Christmases of Christmases past were not wild in many other ways ( ... )

Those cash register tapes with the candy dots - loved them! There's a candy store on Queen in Toronto that still sells them. (Want a favourite candy from your past - check here).

A bit of the bud does make the family easier to take, I'm sure.

Thanks for sharing, Jess - I hope you, N8, Wes and O have a great holiday!

Time for chop suey cam!
