It's finally here, LJ Babies - the presents are wrapped, the tree is trimmed. The kids are ready to explode.
Vesele Vanoce!
I want to share what a traditional Polyp Christmas eve was like, growing up - and I hope you will all reciprocate.
Being of Czech descent, we didn't have turkey or plum pudding or fruit cake (unless it was horrid store bought goo...) The dinner was a strange mish mash of goodies. We would have '
city chicken' - a sort of breaded pork/veal kebob - perogies, breaded whitefish, maybe a ham (but not a honkin' big bone in ham - this would be the 'eye' of a pork shoulder that my Dad, a butcher, would have smoked himself), the ever-present kielbasa (or 'Donkey Dick' as we kids called it...) and one more strange course...
I say strange, because everyone that has come into our circle has always raised an eyebrow.
Chop Suey
Yup - my maternal grandmother came to Canada during the depression, and she found her first exposure to Chinese cuisine - and fell in love. Thus, she included her favourite dish in the holiday meal. Of course, this was an eastern european adaptation - cooked to within an inch of its life, and of course, made with pork (what else?).
Of course, dessert included cookies and cakes and raised dough breads (big ones with almonds on top, little ones stuffed with apple or plum butter). Of course, there was always a load of booze consumed.
After dinner, we would all roll into the living room, and attack the presents - no waiting for Xmas morning for us!
Ahhh - memories...
So - how did you celebrate?
