I just finished reading High Fidelity, so it got me in the mood. Jeremy and I do this all the time, almost every time that we hang out. Here are some of my top fives:
MUSIC
--------------------------------------------
Top Five Most Over-Rated Bands:
1. The Smiths
(this will piss off alot of people, but even though I like their music, it isn't the best there ever was, and it is rather repeditive)
2. David Bowie
(He made a few good songs, but most of his career after "Ziggy Stardust" bites.)
3. The Cure
(I love tons of Cure songs, but it's the same thing as the smiths, too repeditive; also, to be truely honest, I only really connect with like 4 of their songs)
4. Skinny Puppy
(rant on about how much of an influence they had on future industrial music, and I will respond that yes, NIN ripped 'em off, but he took where they were going with it and made it sound cooler than they could have ever done. Most of their songs suck.)
5. Lincoln Park
(there are tons of over-rated bands which should have filled this spot, but as it happens, I've recently been barraged with people who seem to think that this band is amazingly skilled and is slowly bringing back the return of rock. This isn't so... Rage Against the Machine did the rap-rock much more dynamically, Refused blended electronic with hard core with much more ferocity, and well, nothing really should have to be said. Thier singers are horrible: The rapper can't rap, the singer can't sing, the guitarist plays boring and un threatening licks, and the dj (who is probably the most tallented of the lot) is a hack.
Top Five most Under Rated Bands:
1. Violent Femmes
(they had one of the most profound influences on almost every band that I adore, and yet are hardly mentioned anymore)
2. Fugazi
(same reasoning as #1)
3. Sunny Day Real Estate
(their style of music was insanely ahaid of it's time and is rarely mentioned)
4. Pixies
(they can never have enough rating as far as I'm concerned. One of the best bands in rock)
5. Death Cab For Cutie
To me, this band represents where music should be at (on an artistic, and lyrical basis) today
Today seems an appropriate day for top fives, so if you're utterly bored, you should make and post your top five most under-rated and over-rated bands as well... :)
