as for everyone else's comments about "small town," I'd keep in mind that the Valley wouldn't quite exist as anything noteworthy without the access to greater LA. srsly, after the kids are raised, the experience of diversity can only be had by actually going out to the metropolitan places where there is ethnic food, religious houses, squares for public festivities, etc.
I have lived in a small town in the truest sense, and if I didn't have a car, I might actually choose SLO over an undistinguished suburb. but that will never happen!
I'm totally with you though. I wish I could live in city central to contrast, but in Copenhagen I also stayed in a suburb Sundbyvester, 40 minutes bus-train out, and I liked seeing the landscape change over the ride in.
