Happy 49th!

National Day has always been special. I guess Singapore has done a good job of instilling some patriotism in me at least. Best celebrated with the right people and the right atmosphere - celebrations in Nanyang were the BEST. First, a parade with the military formalities that now on hindsight, i was fortunate to be a part of. Then, an all female band rocking out on National Day classics, and us just singing out hearts out and running around the quadrangle doing all sorts of other crazy things. Clean partying.

National Day is not really a 'birthday', but just like birthdays or anniversaries, it gives us the opportunity to commemorate something special (that should actually in fact be thought off with appreciation on a daily basis but since when have we humans ever been this sentimental?). Birthdays celebrate someone's existence on this earth, anniversaries celebrate special occasions, and National Day celebrates Singapore's independence and freedom as a country.

I'm not into public declarations on social media or whatnot but since this place is somewhat private and i'm feeling additionally patriotic today.. Thank you God for Singapore. And thank you Singapore for being my home for the past 25 years, a beautiful, safe haven that i can be proud of. I, and so many other Singaporeans are so blessed to have been born into this country, built up so quickly by our forefathers that we never got to experience what real hardship and suffering really meant. So I know Singapore's not perfect, neither are our politicians or our policies or our public transport etc etc etc..

But, the church i attend, the house i am in now, the laptop i'm typing this out on, the clothes i'm wearing, the 16 years of good education, the job i have, the traveling opportunities, being able to scuba dive, (the list goes on) - its so easy to overlook and take for granted what we have, which is SO MUCH. So so much. Lord, teach me to always count my blessings.

So, my second favourite holiday after CNY - to National Day 2014 and many more to come.
