Not at all meant to insult anyone who is into these things, but there are some decorating trends I just don't get...
1. Puddled curtains. Oh my LORD. This drives me nuts. I'm all about them just skimming the floor, or some other height, but I CAN NOT STAND when they puddle. HGTV design shows are REALLY guilty of this. I know it's a "look" but it just looks sloppy to me, like someone didn't feel like measuring.
2. I also cannot stand something else that HGTV shows seem incredibly guilty of: spending lots of money and time on making drapes, bed linens, upholstery, etc. out of nice fabrics, but not bothering to iron out the wrinkles of the fabric. Or not ironing store-bought linens. Also, when they re-cover, for instance, a chair, they never do a good, tight job, and it always looks sloppy.
3. People on saucydwellings who post pix of their bathroom with the toilet lid open.
4. Unrealistic design idea #1: All open storage in a kitchen. Sure, it looks cool, but in reality, whenever you cook something greasy, it is leaving a film on all your stuff, and then every time you take a step, dust (or in my case, animal hair) is wafting up and sticking to your nice clean dishes. No thanks.
5. Unrealistic design idea #2: Too much white furniture in a house with pets and/or kids.
6. I know a lot of times this can't be helped, but living rooms that are centered around a tv as a main focal point. TVs are ugly. If possible, hide them! And I really don't like them hung over a fireplace - again, I know sometimes this can't be helped.
7. Unrealistic design idea #3: Rooms that don't look lived in - kitchens with completely bare countertops, bedrooms without any hooks, dressers, books on nightstands, alarm clocks, etc. Living rooms with no magazines, remotes, etc.
8. Kitchen photo spreads where you can't see the refrigerator. One of the biggest challenges I'm having in planning our (eventual) kitchen re-design is where to put the fridge.
9. Wallpaper borders. I had to live with ivy along the tops of my bathroom walls from 2003 until this past June. The only time this is even KIND OF acceptable is in a child's room.
10. Vinyl shower curtains. Just a personal pet peeve of mine.
So who else has peeves?
