Sewing help?

So I can't find a bedspread I like for the nursery - there will be a twin bed in there.  I don't want a duvet cover, because I know this thing is going to need pretty frequent washings and I can't handle Battle of the Duvet Cover that often!  I want a thin bedspread/quilt.

I have a sewing machine, and I know my way around it, but I've never made anything like this before.  What should I buy?  What's up with that fabric they make that already has batting sewn on to it?  Would that work for the bottom, and then my choice of fabric for the top?  What do I put around the edges?
