I try not to be too hardcore about anything except meat. I won't eat anything except pastured meat because I think factory farmed meat is too great an evil in too many ways to ever support even a little.

We buy raw milk because the 2 raw milk dairies are the only ones in the state I've found that are 100% grass-fed, although I buy Trader Joe's organic milk for cheese-making because the raw milk is just too damn expensive for me to risk ruining it while I learn.

For everything else, the way I do it is I visit the farmers market first. Only if I can't find something there do I head to the organic section of the grocery store or co-op (and only after considering whether I really need it or not). There I try to find something organic that was grown in my state, when I have the choice. Luckily I live in CA where it seems most industrial organic stuff is grown... So while I don't consider that sustainable, it is at least local and organic, and it is my last resort.

For a while I was slacking off on buying organic as long as it was grown in CA, but I've reverted back to not buying anything in a store that's non-organic, with rare exception. I've been reading too much lately on pesticide poisoning and toxic field runoff to put that stuff in my mouth...
