We certainly did dodge a bullet in 2012. We've dodged quite a few bullets since the end of WW 2 and the beginning of the Cold War, many of them having to do with the outbreak of WW 3 that didn't happen, thanks to the sanity and intelligence of a few human beings on both sides who realized that WW 3 would mean the end of everything and did not push the button even though required to.

You're right in that the most technologically advanced civilizations would be hit hardest by a Carrington Event. People living on farms anywhere would have a better chance than others to survive, though looting could change that. People not living close to big population centers supported heavily by electronics might do much better than others. But urbanites would be in for a horrifying time, and would have a high death rate.

As for those living their lives via the Internet, yes, I think many of those would just give up, because they wouldn't have the faintest idea of how to survive. Or they'd join in the looting and cannibalism -- and get shot dead or otherwise taken out of play by people from rural areas armed with shotguns or even heavier armament. Looting might not spread far from the big cities, either, since most vehicles now depend absolutely on their electronics, while gas stations use electrical circuits to provide the power to pump gas, so the cars would be too fried to operate and couldn't get gas (o wouldn't know how to get it; there are ways, but you have to be aware of them) to fuel vehicles that were still running.
