Phew!

Phul. Dorgo. Woogie.

What do these three words have in common? They are all words I saw on vanity license plates in the course of a single afternoon. Now, seeing one plate like this is pretty funny. Seeing three (all in different places) in a single day is just downright strange, and more than a little unsettling. These all sound like...I dunno, bad fantasy villain names. Maybe goblins.

In further news, I had a pleasant weekend. I took advantage of the semi-decent weather to actually go outside and practice my Diabolo on both Saturday and Sunday, and I really feel like I'm hitting a stride with it. A couple of weeks ago, I finally figured out how to pull off the "chinese suicide" trick, but there were still two tricks that were evading me. On Saturday I worked on both, and one of them seemed to improve while another got worse. And I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong! Even if I pulled it off right (rarely), I didn't know what I'd done right. But on Sunday I tried it again and again, and finally something clicked. Success! Practice does make perfect!

This Games Night also saw me as the traitor in Shadows Over Camelot. I probably could have taken better advantage of the position than I did; all the same, I won, and evil triumphed ;) I'd venture to guess that, as difficult as Shadows is, it's probably easier to win as the traitor than as a loyal knight. Still, it's a really fun game, win or lose!

I wanted to dedicate this weekend mainly to getting some chores done, and going through the piles of papers that litter my room like so much confetti, but I had some inspiring moments so I had to write instead, and ended up completing Mae Fortune chapter 8. Yay! I've also been brainstorming heavily on what comes next, so I feel really confident with future chapters, including Mae's first encounter with the main villain.

The inspiration, incidentally, came from watching an interview with Tori Amos on the concert DVD my friend lent me. Tori has a slow, rambling, abstract way of speaking, and often doesn't seem to *quite* answer the questions she is asked, which unfortunately makes her sound stoned (even though I know she isn't). At the same time, hearing her talk about her creative experiences was very inspiring to me. It reminded me of my own belief that inspiration comes from somewhere else. What Tori calls "filaments of light" coming from another space or dimension, I would call the Holy Spirit. Not that what I'm writing is the Word of God or something; but I'd like to believe that God is calling me to be a writer and is the source of the passion that moves me. Either way, it reminded me to think of creation as less of a selfish, guilt-inducing act than simply acting on what I'm being called to do--fulfilling my vocation, if you will. The stories come and it's my job to express and nurture them--same, I guess, as having a child. It sounds strange to equate a piece of art with the value of a human life, but it's easier to justify doing something that makes me happy if I believe that, ultimately, my creations are capable of bringing good into the world.

(btw, Anne, I'd actually recommend listening to those interviews. I think you'd enjoy them.)

Anyway, happy writing time, productive work time, fun friend time, and great diabolo time. Yay!
