Oh! At Scan Haus they used to make me assemble these awful little hors d'oeuvres but people loved them. You take a water cracker, put a slice of hard-boiled egg on it, then some smoked salmon, then a little shred of lettuce, then a tiny little piece of lemon, then two or three capers, then a sprig of dill. It smelled like death to me but customers couldn't get enough, so I guess for people who like smoked salmon, dill and capers more than I do, this is quite a treat.
Did they specifically tell you to assemble them in that order, or were you just ad libbing? Because I'm picturing a little IKEA instruction sheet with crackers and fish and eggs on it.
Also, eggs? Lettuce? Lemon? That's too much for one poor little water cracker. Blech. Lettuce?! Did the lemon have the peel on it? I'm so perplexed.
Yes, they had me assemble it that way, and apparently that's what they eat in Norway - at the time, I asked a friend with Norwegian grandparents.
I agree that it's too much for one cracker, but it does technically fit, because it's all in small quantities... the lemon has the peel on it, but it's really just a little shred of a slice of lemon... hard to describe the exact amout, but think like half a centimeter square of rind with a centimeter-long triangle of lemon sticking out of it, and that's about what I remember it being like.
