I foolishly asked
dickgloucester for a letter; to name six fictional characters beginning with "M", saying why I'v chosen them. If you comment on this, requesting a letter, I'll give you one. Why should I suffer alone? Actually, this was easier than I expected it to be.
1. Marvin, the depressed robot from Douglas Adams’ brilliant Hitchhiker series. Because what could more fabulous than a depressed robot? A depressed robot with Alan Rickman’s voice, that’s what.
2. Michael Tolliver, aka Mouse from Armistead Maupin’s brilliant Tales of the City series.
Michael was my first gay boyfriend. Mouse is caring and accepting, a little naive and vulnerable; the true heart in Maupin’s body of work. These books got me through a very difficult period in my early 20’s, and remain one of my favorite comfort reads. Close runner-ups in the M’s from this series are Mona, Michael’s roommate, and Anna Madrigal, their landlady.
3. Matilda Wormwood from Roald Dahl’s Matilda. She reads. Voraciously. Not reason enough? Um, why did you friend me? I love a girl with a strong sense of justice, and a plan to back it up. I love a strong female character, period. And Dahl’s sly, wicked humor is razor sharp. Close runner-up in the M’s; Miss Trunchbull-who, until OotP, and Umbridge-was my favorite fictional female villain.
4. Grandma Mazur from Janet Evonovich’s hilarious Stephanie Plum series. She loves gambling & funeral viewings. She shoots chickens and says the most outrageous things. I want to be just like her when I’m her age.
5. Lady Macbeth from the Scottish play by William Shakespeare. What pops into your mind when you read her name? Most likely, the famous “out, damn spot” line/ speech. Same here. A chilling mix of pride, greed, ambition, cunning and eventual insanity, Lady Macbeth is quite possibly Shakespeare’s most complex, most memorable female character.
6. Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling. Why is he my favorite? I admit, I could have just as easily picked Minerva McGonagall, Moaning Myrtle or Mad-Eye Moody. I even considered “cheating “; Moony the Maurader aka Remus Lupin. But I chose Draco (not surprisingly) for a few reasons. I love to torture him. The ferret scene, in both the book and the movie, remains a standout favorite. The Tower scene, and the events leading up to it; where Draco’s struggle is somewhat revealed, but never detailed or afforded fruition is a compelling and tantalizing avenue to explore.
Ok, who hasn't done this yet? Or is insane enough to want a second go?
