EXCERPT:
Tears slowly rolled down her cheek, staining the picture. She seemed to go into a flashback
"Daddy, where are you going?" Selena asked, tugging at his leg; the only place her little arms could reach.
Her father knelt down and placed her on his lap. "I'm going somewhere for work."
"Pinky promise you'll come back?" She said innocently.
"I promise." The man said, showing his pinky. It was large compared to her little one.
The girl hugged her father tightly and then was pulled away by her mother.
She watched slowly as her father left on his train.
"Bye daddy."
Then the second flashback begun.
"Are you Mrs. Evans." A man wearing a long, brown trench coat said when her mother opened the door. It was just two days after her father had left.
"Yes." She said. Little Selena was standing just beside her.
"I have been sent here to give you the horrible news…" The man said with a grave expression. "Your husband Jack Evans has left us."
"I don't understand." Mrs. Evans stuttered.
"He's dead ma'am." The man said apologetically.
"This isn't happening!" The woman cried and lost consciousness. Selena was two young to completely understand what had made her mother faint.
"Why dad!? Why!?" Selena shook the frame. She then threw it towards a wall and covered her eyes. "Why?"
She spent her whole night crying on bed. She loved her dad so much. He was like her best friend. He taught her everything when she was little. That night, she had a dream.
"Dad, is that you?" She cried, seeing a figure appear before her.
"Hey." Her father said, in his deep yet kind voice. "How my little dumplin'?"
"Why?" Selena asked. "Why did you break your promise?"
"I didn't want to." Mr. Evans said. "But God made me. I'll make it up to you."
"Does He hate me?"
"No, He loves all of us."
"Then why did He punish me like this?"
"It's His choice."
"I don't want you to go daddy."
Now, her voice was like a little child's.
"I'll always be with you and your mom." Her father said. "Just close your eyes and remember me."
"Okay." Selena took a deep breath. "Should I become a trainer like you?"
"It's your choice." He said. "I remember from the beginning you loved coordinating and styling. You used to dress up my Nidoking all the time. I remember you loved to draw a lot too."
"So, can I be a coordinator and a stylist?"
"Sure. And I'll be proud of any choice you'll make."
"Why are you here now?"
"I wanted to say something to you."
"What?"
"Happy birthday."
She hugged her dad tight. "I love you dad."
