Title: You Don't Know.
Word Count: 200.
Character/Pairing: Scully.
Disclaimer: Don't own X-Files nor the characters.
Rating: PG.

When someone asks if she has kids, she lets an answer fall from her lips without really thinking.

No. Yes. Never. Used to.

Each one receives a different reaction.

A look of pity from parents when she says No. A smile, a nod, understanding when she says Yes. She suddenly becomes softer with a Yes.

Never is bitter and cold, but she prefers it sometimes because then the conversation strays from children and goes elsewhere. The Used To kills her and confuses everyone else.

She wants the answer to always be No. Because it is the truth, in a sense, and besides, she can’t hold onto this forever. She can’t hold onto petty fantasies of a life unlived while she clutches the baby blue bear that stayed by his side when he slept.

Scully wants to let go. She needs to sometimes, more than anything, because it hurts too much to pretend her life is different. Mulder notices her anguish and he’ll ask about it. She’ll be honest because it’s only him she has left.

“I can’t stand this sometimes, Mulder,” she’ll tell him. “I can’t stand being a mother without her son.”

And she can’t let go.

She won’t.
