Lisa didn’t quite know what to expect. She was a little apprehensive about the party in the first place. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go or was worried about the kinds of people there, but she hoped it would be tame. She wanted no risk of getting in trouble with the police.
After being assured parties and drinking were lax at the college, Lisa went with her roommate, Jaynie. Jaynie was bubbly, exciting, and easily made friends.
Lisa was fascinated by the way she mouthed off to anyone who slightly disagreed with her. She could never speak like that at home and it was interesting to see Jaynie surprise those around her with her foul mouth.
The party was loud and buzzing with people when they stepped into the apartment. It was a little warm, but Lisa didn’t mind so much after coming in from the cool autumn night. Jaynie spotted some friends and quickly weaved through the crowd of people to meet up with them, leaving Lisa behind.
Drawing in a breath, she decided to get a drink. She knew it wouldn’t be long before Jaynie went to get a drink as well so they would find each other then.
Lisa maneuvered around groups of people talking about music and movies and made it into the kitchen. There were less people inside and each one of them held a cheap plastic cup. A tall guy with dark, curly hair walked over to her. He smiled.
“What can I get ya?” he asked.
“What do you have?” Lisa replied, smiling at him in return.
“Here.”
He moved to the counter and dipped a ladle into a large, plastic bowl. Lisa watched as he spooned the dark red liquid into a plastic cup. He handed it off to her.
“Punch,” he said. “Enjoy.”
“Thanks.”
Lisa stepped back into the living room and moved out of the doorway. She leaned against the wall and sipped from the cup. She could taste the alcohol mixed weakly with a fruit drink.
“Who are you?” A deep voice asked from her right.
She looked over at a young man with brown, unkempt hair. He was clean shaven and tall. He raised his eyebrows at her, expecting a response.
“What?” Lisa shouted to him over the loud music.
He leaned closer to her, a little too close for comfort, and placed his mouth near her ear.
“I asked who you were,” he told her.
“Oh.” She smiled at him. “Lisa.”
“Last name?”
“Cuddy,” she responded. “You?”
“House,” he said.
Lisa paused a moment. “First name?”
“Greg.” He smirked slightly, eyeing her up. “First party?”
“No,” she quickly denied it, making a face.
However, it was her first big party with both loud music and alcohol, but she didn’t want him to know that. The only other parties she attended were smaller, quieter, and provided entertainment through board games and movies.
“Okay,” he agreed sarcastically.
Lisa looked over the room, scanning for Jaynie, but she didn’t see her. She focused on a couple dancing to a song she heard only a few times. She sipped her drink, assuming Greg had left her side after guessing it was her first party, but then she felt his breath against her ear again.
“I need some air,” he told her. “Wanna go outside with me?”
Lisa turned to him. “Oh, I don’t know. I came here with a friend...”
She faced the room, searching for Jaynie again.
“Of course,” he said. “You wouldn’t want to work against the buddy system. Although, I’m guessing your friend doesn’t care about you.”
Lisa shot him a look. “Why would you say that? You don’t know her.”
“Don’t think I care to if she left her poor, defenseless Freshman friend alone,” Greg replied.
Her eyebrows drew together quickly. “Hey, I’m not a Freshman!”
“Okay.” He nodded, but still didn’t believe her.
“And she’s not my babysitter,” Lisa added. “I can make my own decisions without her.”
“So, you wanna come outside?” Greg cocked an eyebrow.
Lisa was about to respond, but stopped herself. She locked eyes with Greg, slightly in awe of his tricks, but mostly annoyed by them.
“You manipulated me,” she accused.
He shrugged, a smirk spreading.
“I don’t like you,” she told him.
“Yeah, you do.” He stepped away from the wall. “Come on.”
Greg began to work his way toward the door. Lisa hesitated a moment before going after him. She set her cup down on a bookcase before following him into the hallway.
“You had no right to say any of those things to me in there,” Lisa spoke up when she caught up to his side. “You don’t know me.”
He looked down at her. “I can guess.”
“You were wrong,” she said as she followed him into the staircase.
Greg went down them quickly. “No, I wasn’t.”
“You think you’re some big man on campus, don’t you?” she asked as she continued to keep up with him.
“You have no right to say that,” he mocked her. “You don’t know me.”
Lisa sighed and stopped on the second step from the bottom. “I’m going back to the party.”
“No, wait.” Greg turned to face her. “I’ll lay off. I just like to see who’s intellectually on par with me.”
“Is that right?” She raised her eyebrows.
“Yes.” His eyes were locked with hers. “You passed.”
Greg led the way out of the building and she went after him. Once outside, he leaned against the side of the building. She paused outside of the door before taking a step closer to him.
“You gonna smoke or something?” she said.
“No,” he answered, his eyes on her. “Are you?”
“No,” she replied and then stepped up next to him. “Well, I have some cigarettes, but I don’t really smoke...”
He frowned at her. “Then why do you have them?”
She shrugged. “Just in case.”
Greg looked away from her, watching as a car passed by them. Lisa drew in a breath and leaned her back against the brick wall like he had.
“You know, I have heard of you,” she broke the silence.
“Yeah?” He smirked at her. “And what devilish things have you heard?”
“You’re smart,” she told him. “And a smart ass.”
“True,” he responded and looked away.
Lisa didn’t like silence between them. She found it to be quite awkward. She suddenly wished she hadn’t come outside with him. Or, since she did, she wished she didn’t come out alone with him.
“Why did you ask me to come out with you?” she asked suddenly, the question falling from her lips before she considered what his reaction might be.
“You looked bored,” he answered honestly.
“I wasn’t,” she assured him.
He nodded toward the door. “You want to go back in then?”
She set her jaw for a moment, wondering if this was another test of his or not. “Well, it is a little cold.”
“Here.”
Greg stepped away from the wall and took off his jacket. He held it out to her. She took his jacket and put it on, instantly feeling warmer.
“Thanks,” she said. When he didn’t respond, she continued, “You know, I think what they say about you... I think they exaggerate. I don’t think you’re as bad as they paint you to be.”
“Yeah, but you don’t really know me.” He leaned closer to her. “Do you?”
She stepped back. “Maybe I should get back inside. My friend...”
“Of course.” He nodded.
“Are you coming?” she asked.
“In a bit,” he answered.
“Here.” She took off the jacket and handed it back.
Lisa watched for a moment as he put it on before heading back inside and to the party.
The night went on, but she didn’t see Greg return. She made connections, drank more spiked punch, and even danced a bit. She was having a fairly good time, but she was always distracted by the door. She wanted to see him come back in, but after a while, she figured he went home.
As the number of people in the apartment began to dwindle, the song choices became more mellow. She was standing in front of the kitchen, watching as Jaynie slow danced with a young man Lisa had been introduced to, but had completely forgotten his name.
“Wanna give it a go?”
She recognized the voice and turned, surprised to see Greg there.
“I thought you had gone home a while ago,” she said.
“No.” He shook his head and then nodded toward the couples dancing. “So, how ‘bout it?”
“You want to dance with me?” she asked with a lift of her eyebrows.
“Hey, if you don’t want to, I won’t force you,” he told her.
“I want to,” she assured him.
Greg led her out toward the other couples and placed his hands on her hips. She encircled her arms around his neck, stepping closer to him. She was glad for her heels or else their height difference would have made dancing a little tougher.
“Thanks for asking,” she spoke, eyes locked with his.
“You looked bored,” he replied.
She smiled. “I wasn’t.”
“Okay,” he agreed in that tone that doubted her.
They fell quiet as the music kept on. She moved even closer to him and he slipped his hands to the small of her back. He interlocked his fingers together.
“We should do this again sometime,” he said.
“What do you mean?” she asked him.
“Well, eventually the party will end and-”
“I know that,” she cut him off, stopping his sarcasm. “I meant, like, meeting up? Getting coffee or seeing each other at another random party?”
“Hm...” He thought it over. “All sound good.”
“Yeah, well, I guess I’ll have to get your number,” she told him.
“I’ll call you,” he responded.
She nodded. “So, I’ll give you my number then.”
“Nah, I have the means to get what I need.” The song ended and House leaned down closer to her. He kissed her gently and then pulled back. “Thanks for the dance.”
He stepped away from her and left the apartment. Lisa remained standing there, eyebrows drawn in confusion. Greg House was one very strange man.
She didn’t expect him to call. After all, he didn’t seem all that interested in her. It was just a few brief meetings at the same party that tied them together. But when the phone rang five days later and she heard his voice on the other end, she found herself smiling.
Maybe Greg House was strange and pushy, and had quite a bad reputation following him for breaking rules, even though he was considered brilliant. Maybe he wasn’t all that into her and maybe she wasn’t that moved by him. But she was glad he called and she looked forward to their next meeting, wondering where this blooming relationship with Greg House was going end up.
