Title: Reconnecting
Pairing: Nick/Miley
Word Count: 1,450
Summary: This is my take on their Village Idiot date...

His hands trembled as he stuck his key into the ignition of his classic Mustang. He didn’t know what he was so nervous about; he was just having lunch with an old friend. Needles to say, he had a ton of history with the friend, but still, he had to remind himself it was just two friends going to lunch to catch up.

But his nerves couldn’t be tamed. He pulled out of his driveway and headed towards her house. He enjoyed the long drive to her house because it gave him time to clear his head and try to calm his nerves.

It had been her idea for them to meet up. She figured since he was too busy for a relationship and she was currently in a relationship, they were go into the lunch not expecting anything and they would truly just sit and catch up. But he didn’t feel that way; he had never really gotten over her. Sure, he had dated other people since then, but none of them were her. No other girl could feel that void in his heart he had had since that day a few years ago. He was afraid that he was going to say something and scare her off forever. He finally got a chance to tell her how he felt and all he could picture is her running the other way.

He pulled up to the gate outside of her house and pressed the intercom button.

“Hello” the voice on the other side crackled.

“It’s Nick, I’m here to pick up Miley.”

The gates opened and he pulled his car up the driveway. He knew it was too late to turn back now, and he could only hope things worked out to his advantage and he didn’t completely make an ass of himself. He put his car in park and just sat there trying to collect his thoughts. He wiped his hand on his jeans and stretched. He knew he had to get out of the car and go get her.

He told himself that he needed to calm down and that everything would be fine. When he reached the door and went to ring the doorbell, he noticed his hands were shaking. He stood there for a second, and by the time he had built up the courage to ring the doorbell the door was already open. She was standing there with her hands on her hips and smiling that smile that drove him crazy.

“Hey Miley, how long have you been standing there?”

“Long enough to see you sit in your car and decide if you wanted to actually come to the door or not.”

He had to smile, she knew him so well. She smiled at him, “I thought I was going to have to come out here myself. And here I thought Nick Jonas was a gentleman. So, where are you taking me?”

“Well, I thought we could go to the village idiot for lunch.”

“Sounds like a plan! Let’s go!”

They started walking towards his car, and he had to put his hands in his pockets because all he wanted to do was grab her hand. Seeing her had brought back all of his feelings for her. He knew that the lunch was going to be hard to get thru without him spilling the beans on how he felt about her.

The car ride to the restaurant was anything but awkward. He was amazed at how smoothly their conversation flowed. It was like they never stopped talking. She told him about filming the show and movie; he told her about how Joe had annoyed him that morning. It felt amazing to have his best friend back. He was happy that they could put the past year behind them and remember how good of friends they were before.

When they got within a block of the restaurant, they could already see the paparazzi waiting for them. He looked at her unsure if she would want their “date” made public or not. “Do you want to go somewhere else?”

“No, Nick this is fine. They’ll find out eventually so it might as well be now.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah, let’s go.” He looked at her to make sure she really was serious, and she nodded her head at him. He knew that she was serious so he put the car back into drive and started driving towards the restaurant and into the crowd of paparazzi.

As they got closer, the paparazzi started to realize who was in the car. The two of them braced themselves for the slew of questions they knew were coming.

“Does this mean you’re back together?”

“Miley, what about Justin?”

“Nick, is it true love?”

“Will it last this time?”

They ignored the questions and Nick pulled up to the valet both and got out of the car. He went around to the other side of the car to open the door for Miley and to put himself between her and the paparazzi. He couldn’t believe they were being so ruthless, and it made him even more nervous about the date.

They walked into the restaurant shielding themselves from the paparazzi and trying to ignore the comments they were making. Once they got into the restaurant and got themselves a table, they were a lot more relaxed. Miley had one hand on the table and the other resting in her lap. Nick had to keep his hands in his lap because he wasn’t sure how Miley would react to him holding her hand.

They ordered their food, the roasted half chicken for her and the Pub Burger for him. While they were waiting for their food, they talked about random topics from the guy sitting at the table across from them who was talking to himself and waving his arms around; to their goals for the future.

They got their food, and their conversation broke for a few minutes while they ate. Nick knew that it was now or never that he tell her how he felt about her. He got butterflies in his stomach and was worried that she would notice that something was wrong.

Despite his fears, she noticed and called him out on it. “What’s wrong Nick? And don’t lie and tell me nothing because I know something is the matter.”

He looked down and blushed. He wasn’t sure how to say what he needed to say; how he needed her back in his life; how he was empty without her; how she broke his heart. He started to fiddle with his napkin on his lap and didn’t look up at her.

“Nick, you know you can tell me anything. You know that right?”

He finally looked up at her and saw in her eyes that she truly meant what she was saying. “I don’t know Miley. This past year has been really hard on me. I’ve felt so empty, like something was missing. I know we said we were better off apart since we were so busy. But I don’t want to be apart from you, I want to be with you, I want to try and work things out. If you want to, but if you don’t then I guess we can be friends. But I’m in love with you and you are the one I want to be with.” He looked down immediately when he finished speaking so that he wouldn’t see her reaction to the news. She was probably looking at him like he was stupid. There was no way that she felt the same as he did, if she did she would’ve come back to him before.

A few minutes of silence passed, and he finally looked up and met her eyes; she was crying. “Great,” he thought to himself, “this is exactly what I feared. She doesn’t want me; she just wants to be friends. I really screwed this friendship up. She probably hates me now-“

She interrupted his thoughts, “Nick, I don’t know what to say. I have been waiting to hear those words from you for the past year. I always knew that us growing apart was a bad decision. I want to be with you too, but it’s going to take a while until I’m comfortable enough to actually date. I say we try being friends for a little bit and if that works out we can see where we want to go from there.”

He couldn’t believe what she had just said; it was exactly what he wanted to hear. This date had gone exactly as planned, and Nick couldn’t believe that he was reconnecting with the girl he loved.
