Blood and bloody ashes

Okay, really, this week can stop being eventful any time now. :(

James Oliver Rigney, Jr., better known as Robert Jordan, died today, and frankly, it isn't fair and it isn't right. After hearing of his illness, I tuned into his blog, and I think I ended up admiring him more for the spirit and courage with which he confronted his amyloidosis than I did for his writing.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose.... The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of time. But it was a beginning.

And this is a premature ending. Unless he had a tape recorder running when he told his wife and brother the story to the end about a week or so ago, the Wheel of Time will remain unfinished. Even if he did, it just won't be the same. Like many fans, my husband and I are both quite upset.

My deepest sympathies to his family.
