Since I met the girl, I haven’t been out hiking. I wanted to spend time with her, and that was a good decision. This past week was a good friends b-day on Monday, which was all kinds of awesome but necessitated that I refrain from wilderness goodness.
Hard to believe, but the backpacking season will be over is six weeks!
I am now planning the main event - the ‘100-mile wilderness’. This is a section of the Appalachian Trail in Maine that does not cross a road or have contact with other signs of civilization for 100 miles. I am going to do it all!
I’m a bit nervous about it. I am still not in great shape, although I am a lot better than I was in the Spring. Doing this solo is risky - when the nearest road is 20+ miles away even minor injuries can be life threatening. Still, I am experienced so I should be okay.
At first glance the logistics seemed difficult. I resolved that by finding a place that would let me park at their facility and then shuttle me to the northern most point for a large (but reasonable) fee. I would then hike south back to the facility.
If you have ever read Bill Bryson’s ‘A Walk In The Woods’ this is the same segment that he wussed out of after three days. I figure it will take me 10 days - so 10 miles a days. Should be doable, and allow me sufficient time to fart around as I like to do (go skinny dippen, read a book on top of a mountain, animal watching, sunset watch, and stargaze).
Not enthusiastic about taking the time off from work, but it will be good for me. This is something I have been wanting to do for ages. It is the next best thing to doing the Long Trail over again.
