pragmatism pays
lists oblique, impersonal as blank calendars
waiting, asking
"what will you do tomorrow?"
as she crosses off the weekends

red, red, ink
now black
diagonal lines
rebelling against the straight ones
the ones who know order
who know addition and substraction
and the weather tomorrow

dreams are handy S's with parallel life-lines
with comb-over haircuts and one-hundred percent silk ties
coffee named after Ethiopia
arugala and gorgonzola salad
5am wakeups and racketball at 7

this is nirvana, this is a bonebraking handshake
days marked by hours, minutes,
they are precious to the beholder
like a secret password to the secret cave
this one knows what will happen tomorrow

and so she casts away errant commas
casts away the personal
and becomes the objectionless
navy-crusted and pragmatic
because it pays
