Pondering...

I just got done watching one of my favorite movies of all time, "Dogma", and got to thinking. I was asked a while back from some meme, can't even remember where or when, what movie I associated with the most and I couldn't answer them.

Now, I think I can.

"Dogma" is it. Why? Well... rant time!

Let's see, where to start...

"Dogma" is a movie simply chock-full with comedy, profanity, religious dogma (mostly Christian) and the flaws and benefits thereof, slashy undertones, excitement, intelligence, pretty people, Alan Rickman... etc.

For this being a Kevin Smith movie (whose movies are usually relatively mindless), it brings up some great points, and I adore that God is given so many different descriptions (man, woman, gender-less, a fun-loving skee ball addict...) and the lore it stuffs into one movie makes my heart ache. Frankly, it's an amazing piece of art.

Even the unusual comedy and swearing of Jay and Silent Bob fit in perfectly.

There are no words for how fascinated I am by this movie. And the acting! Brilliant! Every single person in this movie work so hard in order to make it such a worthy film. Linda Fiorentino pulls of Bethany so well, I can truly empathize with what she's going through. Chris Rock does a magnificent job, as does Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Kevin Smith, and Jason Mewes. Even the minor roles - Janeane Garofalo, George Carlin, Alanis Morissette, along with the traditional actors Kevin Smith always has to include in his movies - are exceptional.

I have to say, I mostly applaud Alan Rickman, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck. The effort they put into their roles was and is mind-blowing and I am not even a fan of the last two.. well, mostly the last one. I've found myself growing more and more fond of Matt Damon as the years have gone by, but anyways... These three just make me soo happy.

But every single actor/actress add a flavor to the movie that no other could. They make it fun to watch a second, fourth, or tenth time. It's never boring, that's for sure. You can always catch things you didn't before.

The first time I watched it.. well, the first time I was old enough for it to make an intellectual impact on me, I sat in my room and thought for hours about it, armed with a bible, some other books, and the internet. I'm not kidding.

This movie helped to shape many of my religious beliefs. And rewatching it has the same effect on me as before; every time.

"Dogma" contains the world I wish I could live in. It is fringed with conspiracies, religious and political debates, excitement & adventure, the supernatural, swearing, weed, sex (some), and slash... yep, gotta add slash in. I can't help myself. Most of all, it brings about the question of faith. As blasphemous as this film could be seen as being, it ultimately and undeniably makes one want to believe.

Seeing Bethany and even Jay and Silent Bob having such hope for the future makes me wish I could have it as well. I want to be able to have some sort of faith in God, but I just don't.

I sort of lost my train of thought now. Uhh...

I guess, all I have left to say is that "Dogma" is friggin fantastic and that if you've never seen it, remedy that. Make sure to keep an open mind. Have fun with it, but don't be afraid to analyze it, because this is one movie that's worthy of analyzing... one that won't disappoint you when you do so, ^_^

Oh and by the way.. there's a terrible lack of good Dogma icons, isn't there? I wanted one of Bartleby and Loki, but I can't find any... If anyone knows of one or two and can point me in the right direction, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I think I really love this sort of 'what movie do you associate with the most' or 'what's your theme song' line of questioning. It's fun. I think "Dogma" is my 'life' or 'adventure' movie, I want to cut it down into categories. 'Romance' is next.. XD

I think I may just be really bored and/or freaking out. Sorry! o.O
