This is actually a huge reason why I was dissatisfied by the storyline, TBH. It felt like the narrative was loading the dice in favor of this outcome. IDK.

That's fair. I think I'm okay with it, because I don't really think there's a realistic way to alienate her from the group and keep her around? So I like that there's at least enough respect for the character that she gets her own motivations, and not "she does as Elena says because, um, because."

it's absolutely characteristic of Elena that she would DODGE that question. I really have a hard time understanding fandom's indignation that nobody was asking Elena whether she wanted the cure, because the whole tacit consent thing is Elena's MO

Right. I mean, I am sympathetic to the Good Girl pressures, where she is so heavily conditioned against admitting that she wants or needs anything in particular. But it is a response to conditioning on her part, and not just everyone else happening to her.

Heh. It's interesting seeing him paired with someone like Rebekah, who is SO sincere (and to anyone perceptive enough, utterly transparent) after his chess games with Elena.

Yes! And Stefan is so responsive, that her sincerity starts to rub off on him a little bit by the end. I think it could be really interesting.
