Sorkinitis

I’m trying to pull myself together to do the 30 Days of Awesome Ladies meme, because, WE’VE ALL MET, RIGHT? (I can’t bring myself to start posting it until my ramblings on Tara, Darla, and maybe Dru are actual respectable posts because I haven’t ever actually put together my thoughts on my girls and I want to try to do them justice, so we’ll see) ( Read more... )

Oh my God. I love you times a eleventy billion.

This is just brilliance--and I didn't even read the BSG part! Which--thank you! I swear I'm going to watch BSG sometime soon.

And I know this was just a little grace note in your essay--but How I Met Your Mother. You hit the nail on the head. As much as I love that show--and that is a pretty healthy amount--I'm finding the misogyny to be less and less tolerable. Because holy crap do I love me some Robin Sherbosky. She is HANDS DOWN my favorite woman on television right now (or at least that I'm watching)--And I almost went on a killing spree during the episode where Ted tells her that she doesn't need dudes enough, and that's why she's not desirable. I know--the point of the episode was supposed to be that too much neediness is bad, and that Barney loved Robin's independence. Yadda yadda yadda. BUT THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH. So the fuck what Barney liked Robin's independence? They already figured out that they can't be together. So the only dude in the world (who--by the way is played by a gay guy--which, normally not relevant, sure. But they've opened themselves up to this by making a meta statement about Barney's misogynist behavior through NPH's performance--so I'm just extending that meta to cover his acceptance of Robin as well) who finds awesome, smart, funny, hot-tamale Robin appealing is someone who she can't be with. So, Awesome Ladies, you're screwed. The only men who want anything to do with you and your ability to pay for your own meal are either gay or emotionally unavailable or both.

And the Donna thing on Doctor Who--yeah. That's pretty disheartening. I'm gonna spoil you--so quit reading now if you don't want to know what it's all about.

Donna was kind of this flighty, working class woman who, through the challenges she faces and things she experiences while working with the Doctor, becomes this competent, confident, compassionate woman (she always WAS those things--but she just had never had the chance to flex those muscles). At the end of her run--because of a weird scifi plot thingy--she's become TOO awesome to exist in her old brain. She's going to go insane and die. The alternative is to wipe out her memory of all her experiences and return her to her old, flighty self. She makes it explicit that she doesn't want that--but then the Doctor does it to her anyway--destroying the person she was. ERASING the person she was. Making all her development disappear. Taking from her--she saved the freaking universe. She saved civilizations of aliens. And then giving her NOTHING. Not even allowing her to chose the person she wants to be. It's pretty devastating.

Your last paragraph gives me chills, by the way.

The last paragraph gave me chills, too. And made me worry about my lazy way of dealing with social problems (as in napping all afternoon and not doing it). Sigh.

That Dr. Who plot sounds SO OBNOXIOUS!

Hahaha! Don't worry--you're not alone. 99 times out of 100 I choose napping over social change.

I AM VERY DISTURBED BY THIS ANTI-NAPPING SENTIMENT. NAPPING IS SELF-CARE, DAMMIT.

That's fucked. I have watched most of Torchwood and was eh on it, I liked Captain Jack but not enough to carry the story for me, but couldn't really get into Doctor Who. (Except for the...the Daleks? The ones that are all YOU. COULD. DESTROY. LIKE. US. DOCTOR. and made me laugh for a half an hour straight.) And now I'm kind of glad.

SHE IS SO PRETTY, though, at least that was acknowledged before the mind-stealing? Which is majorly fucking sad that that's saying something.

Yep--that's an interesting point about Donna's appearance. And another thing that I found interesting was the lack of romantic interest in the Doctor from Donna (I've only seen the recent incarnation series 1-4--but Rose and Martha both had some sort of romantic interest in him). So, it does seem weird to eliminate the one woman who didn't really want to make him the center of her world.

And another troubling aspect of the Donna mind-erase was the situation with her mom. How she had learned to stand up for herself, and was starting to turn their unhealthy relationship around a little--and the Doctor took that away from her. It seems to me like he just sets her up for a lifetime of victimhood.

UGH YES. Remember how we ranted about this on Tumblr? Yeah. And how it was like Into the Fucking Woods all over again. UGH.

I love Robin. She's my favorite lady on that show, for sure. She totally should've been on my top 15 characters but I put Marshall on there, but dude it should've been Robin.

The Donna thing... this might be why I don't want to watch Series 4. Because what the ever loving FUCK. I just can't. It's so AWFUL.

Yep. That episode. I swear.

And I love Marshall, for the record. I do still think that Marshall and Lily are one the best portrayals of a couple on TV. I get so sick of the dopey husband and nagging wife. Or the super competent, masculine husband and the nurturing wife. Marshmallow and Lilypad are a couple of goofballs that love the same silly stuff and love each other. And I love that. But I love me some Sherbosky. More than anything. And I totally wanted to kill Ted for hurting her that much during that stupid episode. MY POOR LITTLE ROBIN.

Okay, can I admit that Ted is my least favorite of all the characters? I'm guessing that's an unpopular opinion. But really, there's something about Ted that bugs me. I can't put my finger on it, but what he did to Robin is ON THE LIST.
