I had a very strange experience this morning. I had an anxiety dream, which isn't strange at all--I have those semi-frequently--but it wasn't about me?
I think I gave up on Word somewhere in HS, right around when I first got LJ and was trying to post fic on it. The formatting just drove me nuts, so I started using Notepad and write stuff and then pasting it into Word to save. Then I just cut word out completely. In HS and college, I really only used it to format papers before I printed them. I never bothered to buy it for my laptop, which was frustrating for the first year or so because people just assume that everyone has Word and send stuff formatted that way, but then I discovered how to upload .doc files into GDocs and life's a little easier now. Not much, because Word formatting from .doc to GDocs still goes haywire, but it's got the bare minimum functionality and I'll take it.
I would do the same thing if I were submitting to an on-LJ ficathon, if only because I know that I sometimes drop HTML tags and the easiest way to spot that is posting and then doing a quick check to see if half the fic is in italics. The thing that annoyed me the most was that two people emailed me and were like, "My formatting is wrong! What did you do?"
The answer was "copy and paste exactly what you gave me into LJ, so any fucking formatting errors are your own damn fault." There was one person in particular who took a very particular tone with me about how it would be my fault if no one read their fic because it was formatted in correctly. Um, no, I'm sorry, I pasted in EXACTLY WHAT YOU SENT ME, check your fucking work next time.
(That's not to say I didn't get a lot of apologetic, polite emails from people saying, "I just looked at my story and I think I borked the formatting, can you please post this version instead?" Which was fine and much appreciated.)
