real life. memes. what else do you expect?

Sometimes I honestly, 100% am afraid that I'm just a completely self-absorbed, uncomprehending jerk. That I'm one of those people who doesn't have the ability to be empathic or helpful in any way. I'm always reminded that's not true by stupid things. For example, my mom really wanted a particular pair of boots for Christmas. She finally found them and tried them on and was ultimately disappointed because they weren't that comfortable. I know what that feels like, building something up in your mind, being so excited to finally find it, and being completely let down in the end. I was so upset on her behalf, guys. I hid it pretty well, 'cause it's the sort of thing that she would (lovingly) mock, but I seriously spent fifteen minutes in bed that night wishing that the stupid boots had been perfect and wonderful and everything she had wanted. That was months ago and it clearly still hasn't left me, nor have dozens of other things of that nature.

That's the type of story that I don't normally tell, mostly because I don't need another reason for the itnernet to think I'm crazy and emotionally unstable. It's the type of thing I would never tell my parents (the most frequent objects of these fits of empathy, along with quatredeathlady and mcwonthelottery and other family members), because, inevitably, they're not life-altering moments. They're just stupid little things that my parents have long forgotten but I can't seem to shake for whatever reason.

I only mention it because I had one of those moments at lunch today, and these past few weeks I've really needed the reminder that I'm not an awful human being. I'm not, I guess. At least I love my parents.

That was much heavier than I intended. Whoops!

ANYWAY, I'm going to take a moment to wish a happy birthday to the following:

leiascully, dremiel, solsticezero, krabapple, coffeesuperhero

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GUYS!

All of those people have birthdays this week (or yesterday, I LOVE YOU MARY) and there is no way I will remember each day. HAPPY COLLECTIVE BIRTHDAYS.

So, at work today I was super bored. I had mcwonthelottery do this meme for me on Skype, and then I did it for her. NOW I'M OPENING THE FLOOR UP FOR YOU GUYS.

Pick any character from a fandom of mine and I'll answer the following questions (or, you know, whichever ones I feel like):

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her.
2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
3) Can you relate to this character at all? Does he/she grip you emotionally?
4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by his/her relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how would you see yourself interacting with him/her? Would you get along well? Fall in love with him/her? Dislike? Have a friendly rivalry?
8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about this character (if you dislike) to someone new to fandom?
10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?

IT WILL BE FUN, I PROMISE. To get you started, here's what I said about Dan Rydell earlier:

1)What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her.
My opinion of Danny is that I love him immensely. I love all of the SN crew immensely. But, oh, Danny. He won my heart in "The Apology" and never quite released his hold on it. I love his good intentions and how messed up he is. I love how much he loves Casey. I love when he helps Jeremy out and helps Natalie out and helps Dana out and can't quite figure out how to help himself. I love his New York renaissance. I love everything.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
Well, he's one of the two leads and his emotional arc is pretty important to S2, so I'd say yes :P

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Does he/she grip you emotionally?
Yes. In bad ways and good ways. I can relate to the way he tries to help others instead of helping himself. I can relate to his way of ignoring things and hoping they'll get better and his reactions to the things around him. I can also relate to his hysteria during bits of writer's block and the way he clings to incorrect meanings of things that were sort of imprinted in childhood (ie: Eli's coming). Danny's emotional arc in S2 just breaks my heart into a million pieces each time, so yes, he's emotionally gripping.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
A lot! It's not "my" Sorkin show, but I always forget just how much I like the show until I'm watching it. Unless you mean the actual fandom, like online community wise. In regards to that, I can't say I'm that familiar with it. I've never written SN fic and I only read occasionally.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by his/her relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
I ship Dan with Casey and with his canon love interests and with Dana and Casey in an OT3. Not with Jeremy or Natalie, but I love his relationships with the two of them. I also love his relationship with Issac.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
I... don't know. I would make the show longer? I would make the abrupt reappearance of the Rebecca arc in S2 less abrupt? As a character himself, I think Dan is great the way he is.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how would you see yourself interacting with him/her? Would you get along well? Fall in love with him/her? Dislike? Have a friendly rivalry?
I would probably initially be wary of Dan if I knew him IRL. I mean, from the outside, a guy obsessed with sports who is a vague celebrity and kind of a ladies man? Not my best fit. But if I was forced to get to know him, I think I'd realize we had a lot in common and probably get along with him pretty well. Gender aside, I don’t' think I'd fall madly in love with him, but we would perhaps be cohorts.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
Sadly, no. My favorite character in SN is Jeremy and there are just too many other shows/books/movies/etc for Dan to make the top ten, even if I do love him a lot.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about this character (if you dislike) to someone new to fandom?
I'd... I don't know that I'd do either! I love Dan, but he's not my absolute favorite. If someone new was coming into SN, I would probably tailor my hyping to their tastes. If they were a fan of the Sorkin "two best friends who are awesome and witty and also boning," I would hype him up a little more. Likewise if they like the "poor little rich boy" type characters or just really smart, sweet, less socially awkward guys.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
He's popular with my flist XD But I'm not in the fandom enough to know if he's loved or loathed. He won the f_march_madness poll for SN, so I'd assume he's got a fair amount of fans out there!
