Banned Books Week - Twilight

Oct 01, 2010 20:02

September 25-October 2 is Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of the fight against literary censorship.

Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer

Bella Swan isn't expecting much when she moves from Arizona to Forks, Washington. She certainly isn't expecting to be instantly liked and accepted. Well, instantly liked and accepted by everyone but the one boy who catches her attention. The mysterious Edward Cullen seems repulsed by Bella, but she finds herself drawn to him nonetheless, a draw that only intensifies when he saves her from being crushed by a classmate's car. Could the local legends her new friend Jacob tells her be true? Could Edward and his family actually be vampires? And what does that mean for Bella's tentative relationship with Edward? But it's more than just their relationship at stake--when a rouge vampire finds out about Edward and Bella's relationship, it might be Bella's life on the line as well.

Published in 2005, Twilight quickly went from a sleeper hit to a worldwide phenomenon. It spawned three sequels, a tie-in novella, a movie franchise, and an endless stream of merchandise, ushering in a vampire fiction craze that is still going strong. The story has become as ubiquitous as that of Harry Potter, and many teachers and librarians have praised the series as a jumpstart for reluctant readers. And, much like the Harry Potter series, to which is is often compared, it has had its share of detractors, making it the fifth most challenged book in 2009, for religious viewpoint, sexual explicitness, and being unsuited to age group.

***NOTE: I understand that Twilight is a controversial topic and is disliked by many of the readers of this journal. Despite this, I hope you all understand that no book deserves to be challenged and that I will not tolerate any comments, joking or otherwise, about the censorship of this title or any other.***
