People Who Are Awesome: A List

Oct 01, 2010 15:36

Welcome to PEOPLE WHO ARE AWESOME, the LJ entry where we spotlight PEOPLE WHO ARE AWESOME and allow them to win fabulous prizes which mostly consist of me publicly telling people they are awesome. (It's an awesome prize, don't knock it.)

1. KATY! Katy is awesome because after her gig on Monday she DMed me to tell me she missed me and it made my shitty day. Also because she has mad ninja twitter skills and when I say, "I wish I had an MP3 of [whatev]!" it magically appears.

2. NJ!JEN! You may remember Jen from such escapades as "Torchwood: LA" and "That Trip to Space Farms" and "John Barrowman Fucking a Pumpkin" and "Staying Up All Night Listening to JB's CD and Laughing Like Assholes." (Guys, Jen doesn't even watch TW. JB is her arch-nemesis purely by association.) Anyway, Jen IMs me the other night with this:
Jen: I'm writing a silly little story involving a zombie apocalypse, and was skipping songs on my iTunes to find something appropriate. I decided Barrowman singing "Being Alive" fit the bill.
I thought this was something you needed to know.
Kait: I just choked on my mouthgaurd XD
That is AMAZINGLY HILARIOUS.
Jen: Now I'm never going to look at zombies the same way again.

It really makes the finished product, And He Shall Be Levon, a million times funnier XD

3. dremiel! dremiel soothed my d*con worries and also sent me an AWESOME package with gummy brains and a dinosaur bookmark and a postcard! HURRAH!

4. chicleeblair! Chelsey came with me to see Let Me In last night and let me ramble about shit this morning and did not complain about Buzz Lightyear watching over her as she slept! YAY!

5. Jesse from the comic store! Hooked me up with a screener ticket to a movie I was waffling about seeing. See below!

6. mcwonthelottery! Because Thomas Gibson hates your shitty fanfiction.

Last night I saw Let Me In. I know, I know, I said I wasn't going to waste my time, but it was free and I was super curious. For those of you who don't know, Let Me In is a new movie based on a book called Let the Right One In, which was made into a fabulous movie a couple years ago. (Last year? I'm bad with time.) Anyway, the movie is one of my absolute favorites--it's moving and gorgeous and innocent and twisty. It's more a coming-of-age story than a story about vampires and there are all these layers and... I don't even know. I was hesitant (read: angry and flailing) about the American remake for many reasons, number one being, as the guy hosting the screening said last night, it was already made into a PERFECT movie and we all fucking know how to read subtitles, so what's the point?

Still, I'm glad I went. It was genuinely good, once I managed to divorce it from the original. I'm going to have longer, thinky thoughts on it on my other blog once I re-watch the original, but on its own, it stands really well and it's a fairly faithful adaptation. There were a couple of changes that I didn't like, but chicleeblair, who hadn't seen the original/read the book, actually really liked those parts, so who knows? But it was definitely faithful to the tone and sentiment of the source materials and any movie that still has me thinking twenty-four hours later (even if it is just in a compare/contrast way), is clearly worth the ticket price. (Even if it was free this time. ::shifty eyes::)

So, if you were waffling about the movie, I'd say go see it. It won't be a waste of your time. If you've never heard of it before or never seen the original, I saw DEFINITELY go see it, but then rent the original to compare. (Make sure you get the version with the theatrical subtitles--it's a long story, but you will regret it if you don't.) Even if you don't like vampires/horror, make a point to see it. As I said above, it's not a scary movie and it's not a movie about vampires. It's about a little boy trying to grow up and a little girl who never can and the friendship they try to forge when their paths cross.

nj!jen, people who are awesome, cardigan central, movies, mighty kate, friends
