the gods are not pleased + meme

Booooookstoooooore. Um, all morning. And then tomorrow night and every other morning until Sunday.

So, right. Today, many, many things happened at the Bookstore. Where to start? The first book of The 39 Clues came out today, and we didn't get the corrugated display until like, two in the afternoon. I was concerned that we would run out of the trading cards that go with the books before it came, but we did have one box left so... whew. I'm really interested to see what happens with this series, because I think that gamer kids are a great demographic to pitch to. Also, I'm dying to see if they can sustain the internet side of it for the duration of the project.

Continuing on in my day, around 10am or so there was A STORM OF DOOM. The sky was pitch black, water was pouring down and flying sideways through the air (and into the ASM's jeep, which still had the doors off of it). Thunder, lightning, the whole deal, and it lasted almost an hour. It didn't stop raining until long after that, but the worst of it lasted until eleven, at least. Crazy! There were a bunch of people "stranded" in the store, including a ton of little kids back in my department. They were mostly well behaved and cute and didn't bother me as I was forced to jury-rig a series of plastic cups and tape to stop the leaks in the windows that were drenching the gift spinner and American Girl back-to-school display with gross dirty water. It was good, death-defying times, as instead of getting a ladder from receiving, I opted to climb on things and stand on tip-toe on the ledge. I did manage it, however. I am AWESOME at problem solving!

Let's see. I also had to type up the staff recs, since I am taking that over as My Thing. The second most frustrating part was that the girl who made me wait more than TWO WEEKS for her to write hers up did not, in fact, complete the form. She wrote her name, the book, the author, the ISBN, but not her recommendation. So I had to read the book and then write a recommendation for her. The MOST frustrating thing was making the sign look pretty using only Microsoft Word and the fonts that it comes with. UGH UGH UGH. It came out all right, but it took me an hour and there are already a million things I want to tweak.

But, in all of this craziness, something good happened. I mean, the rest wasn't BAD, per se, but it was regular work.

When I first started, my boss told me that parents would get to know my recommendations and specifically ask me for books based on them. I am TERRIBLE with faces, so I'm never sure when this actually happens unless the parent says so (with the exception of a few people I know). Today, this mom asked for book recs for little girls, so I pulled the usual--Fancy Nancy, Olivia, Pinkalicious, and a couple others--and after I handed it to her, she said, "I'm glad you're here because the last time I was here you recommended me his (referring to her son) favorite book ever."

I sort of already had an inkling of what book it was, but I asked and she said, "How I Became a Pirate! Do you have anything else like that?"

I started to hand her to sequel, and her son turned around and said, "PIRATE! PIRATE! PIRATE!" and grabbed the book excitedly, and it was pretty much the best moment of my week. I mean, sure, I guess the credit should go to Melinda Long and David Shannon, but I like to think that I have some part in their success.

(But seriously, I hand-sell the hell out of this book, and if you have little boys in your life and haven't read it, you totally should buy it for them. It's cute, hilarious, just on the right level for boys from about four to eight. Fun times, I swear. How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long, illustrated by David Shannon.)

Okay, and now, here's that meme that everyone's been doing. I know you all hate it and it drives you crazy, but I've had the questions for a while and should probably post it. So don't look under the cut if you don't want to know!

Okay, you know the deal by now. If you want the actual questions, comment with your e-mail address, but you have to internet-promise to do this on your own journal if you ask for the questions.

eta: Okay, so I just did that "type your LJ name into this field and I'll will generate a list of things you might be interested in" and every single result was the name of a TWW character. Oh my god, internet. Seriously. I'm not even going to post it. (Also, my interests are super cool as it is, so I don't need to make them cooler.)
