Yesterday I was out with my friends for an all you can eat sushi lunch at Metro (pretty good selection and quality for $13, tax and tip incl.) and some soccer. 4 years of no physical activity and then 30 minutes of a sport destroyed me. I'm not feeling any pain right now so I guess I didn't fully exert myself but it was still pretty intense. We had 3 on 3 with goalies so 2 forwards each. Highlight of the game was when I called out to my teammate "Yo! It's time for the Double Dragon!" and we managed to score a goal with no strategy at all.
Anyways, afterwards when we were just relaxing at a park, I found a small wasp's nest. It was approximately the size of a golf ball and was guarded by 2 wasps. After shooing the wasps away (with gravel), I managed to extract the nest from its perch and I took it home.
The nest is made of a papery material and is sectioned off in hexagonal cells. On closer inspection, I have found that every larva is currently still alive (this was a triumph...). There are about 12 or 20 larvae in various stages of growth including maybe 5 eggs that haven't hatched. One of the larva has recently entered a cocoon of some sort. I have no way of feeding the rest of them "softened caterpillar flesh" (I looked it up on
wiki) so they might die off. One of the cells was already sealed off so I'm assuming there's a developing larva in there already. When/If it hatches into a wasp, I hope it takes care of the remaining larva and one of them spawns into a new queen.
Still no idea where to get caterpillars though.
EDIT: I'm feeding them tiny droplets of honey. It seems to be working.
Also, a picture of the hive:
