Special Interview

Unable to doubt a person - Yoshitarou, the character you can’t hate.

-- Well then, firstly, please tell us about the work this time.

Say "Detective drama", mainly the hero deduces the criminal and tracks them, although I'm imagining a cool detective mystery, but this time's drama, the character I'm acting, Katayama Yoshitarou, from the beginning of the first episode, is the type to say, "I want to quit being a detective" (laughs). However, someday, he got involved in an incident/case and with the support of the people around him, in a deducing manner that can be done only by Yoshitarou, to arrest the cornered criminal... Is the kind of drama it is. Even for a person with a lot of drawbacks, with acrophobia (fear of heights) and gynophobia (fear of women). The biggest problem is, in a job that in a certain aspect doubts people, he can't seem to do so. This time, with even the appearance of an original character, I think you'll be able to enjoy the drama version.

-- It's the traditional "Sat9" though... (This 'question' is asking Aiba for his opinion on appearing in the Saturday, 9pm timeslot for NTV, which is a popular timeslot)

Well, yeah, I think it's a time frame where you'll be able to enjoy watching it with your family. Furthermore, there's no school for the children the next day. Even now, my tension is rising!

-- Upon playing the role Yoshitarou, is there any preparations you did?

Firstly, the hair is black. Yoshitarou's hair characteristic is that probably "there is no commitment". That's a very big characteristic to have.

-- What kind of character is Yoshitarou?

Even though he has a lot of bad points, he's a hardworking person. It's just that from his working method to his accomplishment was is a bit... I'd like to act it out while having fun.

-- What did you think of when the offer for this drama came about?

Well, I ran to the bookstore in a hurry? It is after all, a famous work, that I do remember reading about it when I was  a student, but first and foremost, I bought and read "Mikeneko Holmes no Suiri". As the mysteries overlap each other, it feels like a picture was drawn in my mind, and I was immediately addicted to continue reading.

-- What is the likeable part about Yoshitarou?

It's a character you won't hate. Whilst being whacked in the ass, he's also supported by a lot of people around him, you'll feel the bond. There's a similar part to me. As I get older, I get slightly more scared of high places... There's the "I know, I know..." feeling. But what about females? (Yoshitarou is afraid of females). I haven't had any scary experiences with them yet but, maybe in the future... (laughs)?

-- How is co-starring with a cat?

Cats don't really have the image of becoming attached to humans but, this time, the cat acting as Holmes is very attached to humans. I've never kept a cat, or even embraced one, but it was very warm. When I put it inside my Y-Shirt for a poster shooting, I felt Holmes's body heat, and there's a feeling of being connected, ne!

-- What type is Yoshitarou's fashion?

The investigation division Yoshitarou belongs to have a rather free consideration to it.

-- In the Katayama household Yoshitarou belongs to, there is a "One detective family" concept... Is there a concept in the Aiba household?

Unn, it's rather freewheeling. There probably isn't one.

-- In the Katayama household the investigations are done through family meetings but... in the Aiba household, are there "family meetings"?

Hmm, let's see... since I was young, my dad was the type of person with a lot of interest. For example, "Tomorrow we're buying a hot fish (帯魚) and an aquarium" he'd tell us, and we'd choose what kind of fish by pointing at is, but "I decided to buy a dog" he's suddenly say... that kind of thing happens quite often. Rather than meetings and consultations, it was basically just reports.

-- Talking about detective roles, is there a scene you'd like to do?

Yoshitarou isn't really detective-ish though, but there are scenes of pursuing the criminal. I don't know it I'd get to do it, but I'd like to use the handcuffs. It'll go "gyuut" and twist around the criminal's arms. Since I don't even own a pair of handcuffs, I'd like to try one.

-- Have you always liked suspense and mysteries?

Originally, with "Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo", I've been reading it since my student days. Akagawa Jirou sensei's novels are, once you read it, a picture is drawn (in your mind), it's that kind of workpiece is what I think.

-- With regards to criminals, are you good...?

... Well, yeah (laughs)(grins). It's this guy, that's the guy, I'm the type that would solve the mysteries and deduce the criminals whilst reading the books and mangas,, and watching the dramas. That's also how I was watching (Sakurai) Sho-chan's 「Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de」 ('11).

-- Do you have that kind of reasoning?

Eventually, it'll come out (laughs). Isn't that so? Whether it's that kind, is also a mystery... right (laughs)?

Also looking forwarf to Leader's starring mystery (drama). I'll support it!!

-- Ohno Satoshi will also be starring in 「Kagi no Kakatta Heya」 (Fuji TV Broadcast).

I'm looking forward to it. The intriguing point is that it's locked-room mysteries, so I think I'll definitely watch it. We're both put in the same cool, and also challenging mystery (drama), so rather than being aware of it, I'd like to enjoy it. I'll support it. Even though I don't know of Leader will cheer me on or not (laughs). For both leader and I, in terms of personality, since last time, we're not the type to think "we won't lose", cos we both won't declare war and such (laughs). If possible, Saturday nights at 9 and Monday nights at 9, saying "let's watch together", I'd like the dramas to get along. How I see it, ne. However, when I watch Leader's drama and search for the criminal, surely, I'll probably can tell (laughs).

-- Well then, amongst Arashi, who do you think is the most skilled in reasoning and insight?

This kind of deduction and such, the one who likes it the most is probably Nino (Ninomiya Kazunari) I think. He sees a lot of works, and thinks about it. For me, rather than reasoning... I'm good at riddles. Last time, when my family goes for drives, there'll always be a riddle book in the dashboard, and my family will be doing it. And that is where it's cultivated. Well, it's all tonchi-based though (laughs). Taking advantage of reasoning skills strengthened by riddles? (laughs). I'd go and resolve the incident exactly. Anyways, I'd like to, whilst having fun, also bring out the magical charm of Yoshitarou, is how I feel.

Aiba Masaki's Spring Talk

Question: Spring is what kind of season?
Personally, I'm allergic to pollen. That's why, actually, spring is a very sever season (laughs). Every year, I'd think up of things like how to counter hay fever. However, if you say spring, as expected, it's Sakura. Sitting under the sakura tree, even if you're not drinking and eating, it's there's a row of sakura trees, I'd walk through a bit on my way home I think. Even then, last time, things like flower garden and such, even though I didn't really have much interest, since I'm getting older eacy year, if I try going now, it'll probably be ok! And bit by bit, my interest change, ne.

Question: In Spring, what is your ideal walk course?
I'd like to go on walks that double as golfing sessions. It's already been about more than 1 year that I haven't done (golfing). The scenery at the golf field is pretty. There are a lot of trees planted, and differs with every hole. I wouldn't ride the carts but go around on foot. With that, since morning, there'll be a feeling of exhilataion, and the satisfaction after it endswill also feel good, ne. Also, I'd like to give scuba diving a try. Since I don't have a license, instad of doing earnestly, I'd like to try it just once.

Question: For people who are staring a new life, what is your advice?
If with regards to me, saying "a new life" as expected, will probably refer to 「Arashi's Formation」. Personally, in my life, it's a very big event. But at first, I had no control of it, so I had just surrendered to the flow. Doing it that way, is it a good thing or not, I'm not so sure, but that's how I did it. Even though my new drama is starting, I don't feel the pressure, but more so, I'm looking forward to it.

Oh gosh, that was long.
I'm not fluent in Japanese so I'm sorry if there's any mistakes.
But translation makes my English horrible and weird too somehow,
so I'm sorry if it's difficult to make sense~!!

Mikeneko Holmes will begin airing in less than two weeks times.
