I really wanted to send a reply to Rep. Knaparek at first - something along the lines of ..
"Thanks for the response, but you did not answer my questions:
(repeat questions)
..and by the way, has anyone ever told you you look eerily like CJ Cregg from 'the West Wing'?
XOXOXO,
Michael"
.. but I didn't.
After reading the local press on the issue, I'm fairly certain she doesn't want to get skewered in the press by giving ANYONE an actual quote. Look at
Warde Nichols' statement. He is getting tore up from the floor up for it - which, based on the actual quote, he totally deserves - but there really isn't any way to voice dissent on this issue without getting painted by the proponents as being pro-rape.
Look at this doozy from last Thursday:
"'There is a misogynist culture in the Arizona Legislature that was clearly demonstrated by today's vote,' said Bill Hart, executive director of the Arizona Sexual Assault Network. 'I ask those four members (who voted no) who they represent, victims or rapists?'"
So I suppose I understand the double-speak. I would have liked to know what her specific objections were, but she ain't talkin'. I'm slightly encouraged that she has "made a commitment to review the issue again after session and work on a solution for next session," but I don't understand why they didn't attempt to amend the existing bill instead of rejecting it out of hand.
I did some digging around on the AZ state legislature site. Unfortunately, the minutes form the Human Services committee on March 10th aren't available online yet. So we shall see.
