A deep sigh escaped me as my eyes narrowed ever so slightly. I would have to venture out soon, to see if I could find any sort of toys on this ship... which, at the moment, I had no idea how likely or unlikely that might be. But rubber bullets wouldn't keep me satisfied for long, and they were rather difficult to attempt to stack ( ... )

L tapped one bare foot toe-first against the floor outside, the seconds crawling by. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been so socially anxious. I really shouldn't trouble myself with such worries ( ... )

Just as L was beginning to formulate a perfect plan for actually meeting Near, the young man opened the door, and L came face to face with his successor for the first time.

He knew, already, what Near looked like. He had seen photographs of the boy when he was much younger, and heard him described even before that. White hair, pale skin, black eyes, tendencies and quirks like yours, L. He stared down at Near, still taller despite the fact that Near was older than he should have been. Near should still have been much younger, L thought, he should have been a promise of the future rather than a very solid vision of the present. It only reminded L that in Near's reality, life had left him. He was history, permanently confined to the past ( ... )
