----------------------

Most people who meet Mycroft more than once realise that he always has his umbrella. Even if you go to his office, there it is, in the umbrella stand by the door. Some people think nothing of it, many businessmen carry umbrellas, partly because it completes the polished, prepared look, but mostly because this is Britain, and it's more likely to rain than not.

Others, who know Mycroft a little better and are on the cusp of knowing how much of the government is under his control, regard it with a deep suspicion and hypothesise that within it is a blade sharp enough to run you through without you feeling it.

There are no rumours. Nothing so vulgar, and besides which, if there were rumours Mycroft might get to hear of them and that would be bad, but there are the faintest whispers that the umbrella is not a sword, or anything of the kind, but that Mycroft could kill you with it just the same.

Some people, more practical, less narrativistically minded people, consider that the umbrella would be a very good hiding place for any number of USB stick 'Secret Document' type-of-things and several people have tried, over the years, to make off with it for that very reason.

No one has ever heard from them again, but Mycroft still has his umbrella.

The truth is something that exactly five people in the world know, and Mycroft is very good at keeping it that way. He is especially pleased by the idea that it's a sword-umbrella and in idle moments he considers having one made, just for his own amusement.

The truth is that the umbrella is just an umbrella. It has no hidden devices or secret weapons concealed within it. It is an ordinary umbrella, useful only for keeping the rain off his shoulders.

The truth is that the umbrella was given to him by his Father on the day he began his first, rather lowly, position within the Government. It was given to him with a rare smile and a handshake, and for a moment his Father had looked intensely proud of him.

Mycroft keeps the umbrella safe, along with the memory of his Father's proud smile.
