You probably already know I am so far loving the BBC radio adaptation of Clarissa (it's got Richard Armitage playing Robert Lovelace so of course I love it. And though I love the man, stop playing jerks! Please! Even though you are good at it, I would like you to play someone like Harry Kennedy again). I also am addicted to Foyle's War. Finished the second series yesterday and just put the third one on hold. I really hope I don't wait too long for it :) This is a very, VERY spoiler-y post if you haven't seen/listened to either, so...just stay away if you don't want to know what's going on...
Anyway. Just some thoughts on both shows that crossed my mind yesterday when listening/watching (SPOILERS ahead):
Clarissa
- As far as I can tell, she doesn't love Lovelace. There was one scene where I thought there was an attraction but she keeps saying she has no feelings of that sort for him. So why keep writing to him, even to tell him "I'm not interested, go away"? Because when she writes to him, he writes back, and proclaims his passion for her. Also, she's so convinced that her family won't marry her off to Solmes if she can convince them. See, the entire problem could be solved if she stopped communicating full stop with Lovelace - by continuing to write to him, even to tell him to stop his nonsense and go away, she's encouraging him.
- I know that she does tell her mother she doesn't love him and she even gives her mother the letters that Lovelace sent her to show that she has no care for him, etc. It seems to me the mother is fully on Clarissa's side, but the father is influenced by the awful brother and sister. Also, the brother is a total baby. It's all his fault that Clarissa is in trouble anyway. If he hadn't used his old grudge against Lovelace to start a fight against him, then there would be no problem. Also, I find it awful for Clarissa that her brother doesn't want her to marry Lovelace NOT because he's a libertine but because he has a grudge against Lovelace from their college days (that's what it seems like to me...I could be wrong).
- This is probably difficult to work out but when Clarissa runs away from Lovelace at the end of Part 2, why couldn't she have done it earlier? Why couldn't she have just skipped town with him and sneaked out sometime soon after they got to London, without Lovelace noticing? Or from the Inn? I don't know, she seems hard pressed to NOT be around him, yet she makes her escape so late. I guess that's to Lovelace's credit, he had her full in his grasp up until the end of Part 2.
- So did Clarissa's brother find Solmes as a suitable suitor for Clarissa because he was pissed at her and wanted to make her feel bad or did he genuinely just pick the first guy that came to mind? I mean, it seems like there is no love for Clarissa from her brother and sister. I don't understand why Clarissa wants a reconciliation. I mean, her siblings already seem to hate her or have a grudge against her - just marry Lovelace and show off (I don't really mean that).
- If Belford admires Clarissa so much, I don't know why he doesn't have the guts to stand up to Lovelace in person and save Clarissa himself. Come on Belford, if you can chide your friend in your letters, why can't you be man enough to do it face to face? Just take her away, duel him, whatever. You know Lovelace is a cad, just give him what you've got.
- And lastly, WTF Clarissa. Why would you drink ANYTHING Mrs. Sinclair gives you? You don't have to be a lady and be kind and drink what was offered to you. It was SO OBVIOUS she was going to drug you. You're so learned and intelligent and you can't tell from her voice that she's going to stab you in the back? LE SIGH.
I really do like the dramatisation and OMG Richard Armitage. I was just thinking of the what ifs. I guess if things had worked out for Clarissa, we'd have no story so it's probably just as well that everything happened as it did :)
Foyle's War
- Christopher Foyle is one of the most awesome detectives EVER. EVER EVER EVER. There's something great about how passive his facial expressions are. He usually looks so nonchalant but when his face changes, it's so subtle, so great. He is truly just an amazing character and I love him. It's sometimes maddening to watch a character that's correct all the time, but he's created and built in such a way that you want him to be correct all the time.
- So I've shipped Sam and Andrew (Foyle's son) and/or Sam and Milner, the DS. There were a lot of hints for Sam and Andrew - subtle but sort of in-your-face at the same time. Well, at the end of series 2 they FINALLY start going out. Hurrah! Sam and Milner is a bit more convoluted, I guess. His wife is a total freaking psycho non-understanding person. OK, that's an exaggeration but I don't like her. She's not meant to be liked. But I *think* she's preggers but we haven't gotten a confirmation yet. So I'm waiting to see how that works out. The Sam/Milner ship I see more from his side and less from hers. But I'm happy with Sam and Andrew. It's more appropriate, considering Milner's married...
- "The Funk Hole" was amazing. AMAZING. I mean, I'm crap at guessing the killer in police-procedural/murder-mysteries but I didn't see that one coming at all. It was just so well done.
- I love that each episode is 100 minutes long. It's like a mini-movie and every little thing is clarified and dug in to. Love it.
- As far as the continuity issue I had from last time, well I guess we're supposed to assume that things have happened between episodes, because Sam lives in a different place (Andrew walked her home!!! I am a nerd) now. That would have been strange, if she still stayed with Foyle and Andrew came home and found her there. AWKWARD.
So anyway. I need to go study now. But I thought I'd get those thoughts out before i forgot them. Happy Friday!
