ive been a busy little bee as of late. its funny how everytime i update this thing, people comment how i am living a socialite life... and while i am FAR from being an actual socialite (i dont have cash coming out of mine or daddy's ass and taxis are EXPENSIVE), i sure feel like i am sometimes! i've been hitting up a few parties/receptions a week and i can even breeze my way into VIP via friends and aquaintances. last week at the BENTO party in nishi-azabu's club xcross, i was rubbing shoulders with momoi kaori, narimiya hiroki, and pizzicato5. not long after that, olivia showed up randomly with her BF and came and sat with me in VIP which gave me instant cred since every man in the booth area was oggling her.
a few weeks before that, i got a call from taraman who is working on VIA BUS STOPs catalogue as a stylist about a reception party for their new shop "BERN BERN" in la foret (the 2nd floor on la foret now houses nicola formicetti's avant garde shop 'side by side', the fashion forward men's shop 'gr8', and VBSs' 'bern bern' which makes it THE place to go straight to upon walking in the madhouse of that mall. unfortunately it is a bit out of place with the grace continentals, hysteric glamours, and do as de base's, but hopefully it will fare well). i got to stride right in with the drop of taraman's name and went straight for a glass of champagne. i immediately recognized my favorite 'distant friend'(a nice way to say 'party aquaintance') lee all dolled up in willhelm attire and circus makeup for the reception. why didnt they ask me to model?! oh, that's right, short stumpy models aren't exactly de rigeur... upon finding taraman (after a few chats with the beautiful runway model caroline who i had the plaesure of meeting last year at hiromichi nakano's show, she's still super sweet and totally deserving of her top title despite being slightly vertically challenged in model terms) i noticed a guy looking like a cherry about to explode taking pictures with large groups of people....is it? no...it can't be...but is it?? i turn to taraman with my 4th glass of champagne in hand, and his umpteenth, and ask.."is that guy an actor? perhaps the guy from..." "YESSSSssu!! he is NANA da yO!!" he spittles out. at that very second as if the cosmos were trying to play a trick on me, mr. narimiya hiroki (AKA 'nobu' from NANA, also in last quarter) turns around in all of his red-faced buzzed glory. i immediately regain my composure and manage a "hi!" and taraman introduces us and we shake hands... but not before taraman tries desperately in his drunken stupor to chitchat about olivia and the anime version of nana and my personal and business relation to her, and how it relates to him... and meanwhile im trying to get him to SHUT UP because i know narimiya could give a shit about the anime, but luckily narimiya's friend saves us all by taking him out of the party and probably off to casanova. he parts with a "jaa, mata" and a smile. phew...better a short intro than a bad one. after the 9pm ending time, everyone goes out to move to a club but i had a shoot the next day so i opted to go home...
fast forward a week later and im in takeshita dori trying to gather accessories for another shoot i was doing the next day, and i get an unknown call on my cell. upon answering, i get a heavily british accented 'hello, this is martin webb, fashion editor of japan times, jai gave me your number, is it ok to talk?' ...it was ok to talk, but over the loud gnawing of crepes and ruffling of thankyoumart bags (the caws and cackles of young people going without saying) i could barely hear what he was saying to me. i got 'emergency...osaka...can't make it....american rag cie opening....please attend....pictures...contact hirayama san..." when i figure he's done speaking, i ask if he can send all the info via email to my home acct. upon getting home, i see he wants me to attend the american rag cie opening in aoyama and to take pictures of fabulous fashionistas for his website. i figure why not, i didnt have any major plans and networking is always a plus. so i show up 20 minutes after the 7pm start walking through the cold rain to minami-aoyama (luckily, the omotesando station is near...aoyama is notorious for having no train stations so thats why only the rich can live and play there). i have my 4megapixel pentax optio and my roommates 7megapixel coolpix in tow, and after finding my contact the PR guy hirayama (who was a sweetie, BTW...and so was his wife...>_+)i introduce myself as misha, in place of martin.
hirayama-san:oh! misha! from the japan times!
me: right....japan times...
hirayama:great, glad you could make it. do you need help setting up your camera?
me: *pulls out coolpix* uh,no...i got my camera right here...
hirayama: oh...i see...well, lets get started, shall we? here is our first rack of clothes...do you need me to set them up in the light?
me: uh....actually,i need to take pictures of people.
hirayama: ok, you can stand up on that staircase to get a good shot of the party..
me: no...i mean, *snapshots* of...special people...
hirayama:oh, ok...well here's a pretty big stylist and his two assistants over here..
me: *glances at their black coats and flat brown boots* actually...i mean SPECIAL people..*wink wink*
hirayama: *blank*
me: as in...CELEBRITY special people
hirayama...oh!!!! well...uh, we don't have any yet....but let me introduce you to some people...everyone!this is misha from the japan times!...
..as i smiled wryly trying to keep my coolpix out of sight. it wasnt bad enough my camera was embarrassing, but i only had my "stylist" meishi with me, and i knew people there who were like 'since when did you start doing martin's job?' and then they kept asking me all these questions about martin..who i'd never MET before and i just felt like a total ass. and in the end, no celebrities showed up, and no one dressed fabulously (to give them credit, it was raining outside and everyone was forced to carry their umbrellas around) but in the end the only good that came out of it was champagne and white chocolate covered strawberries. im gonna need to go on a diet! oh, i also got to know the lovely alicia who works at harpers bazaar japan. contact, contact!
and in the coolest news EVAR, olivia called me a few weeks ago and asked me to be her stylist! i was so shocked and honored... i dont know exactly what she wants me to be her stylist for...PV, CD jacket, magazine shoot, but she's been sending me her favorite shots from CD jackets and PV scenes so i think this is going to be BIG. im so nervous but im also so excited because she loves avant garde and *i* love avant garde and its going to be GREAT. in other good news, my photos i did last year with maciej...one of my first photoshoots that we took in the bamboo forest with the colored feathers... they are going to be published in a magazine!! the magazine is called iconiamoda (also iconiamoda.com) and the mag will be released in new york, london, barcelona, buenos aires, and bogota in May. if anyone is in the those cities in may, be sure to pick up a copy!! they love the dark, edgy, fashion forward stuff so it should be cool yo! lastly but not leastly, after chance meeting with martin webb for the first time at the bento party in my super awesome vintage red and black polkadot dress (i got it from value village for a dollar!!) he suddenly contacted me and asked me to help him cover Japan Fashion Week for the japan times and dazed&confused japan starting this saturday. Lad Musician and Dress Camp, here i come!!
tomorrow is my last day of fashion school as a first-year! over and out!
