Mikey woke some hours later. He saw his brother staring out a pathetic excuse for a window and the Doctor picking away at old computers. Frank was asleep on the floor next to him. As were Ray and Rory. There was someone missing though. Well, if he let himself think about it, there were a lot of people missing. Grace. Lindsey. Bandit. Alicia, though there was no chance to get her back. As if reading his mind, Mikey jumped when his brother said, “She’s outside.” His heart stopped. It took a moment before he realized what ‘she’, Gerard was talking about. Amy.
Mikey nodded, then stood and grabbed his jacket. After quietly making his way outside he found Amy sitting on the hood of the Trans Am, looking up at the sky. No one ever said it, but he knew they were thinking it, that it was a bit of a miracle Mikey was letting this girl get close to him. She was fiery though, and reminded him so much of Alicia. Maybe that was a bad thing, but he thought maybe for once he could have something good in his life again. Mikey smirked when he saw her shiver a little. “Here,” he said, handing her his jacket.
“Thanks.” Amy put the jacket on while Mikey climbed up onto the car next to her.
“It might be a desert, but it gets pretty cold at night” Mikey glanced down at her and smiled. She was still looking up at the stars. “What are ya thinkin’ about?”
“That poor girl,” Amy whispered. “She must be so scared.”
“Gracie? Nah, Grace is a tough girl. She’ll be okay.”
“What happened to them?”
“Lindsey and Bandit,” Mikey asked. Amy nodded and looked over at him. It was Mikey’s turn to look up at the stars. “Lindsey was… assimilated. They took away who she was. Gee and I found her a few months after she was taken. She didn’t even recognize him. They didn’t need to do anything to B. She was so young, just taking her away and destroying Lindsey was enough. Her memories, her fire. It was gone.” Mikey closed his eyes for a minute, a few tears escaped and slid down his cheek.
He opened them again when Amy took his hand. “It wasn’t your fault, Mikey.”
“Yeah it was. It was my idea to go into the city. My stupid fucking idea to take him away from them. I got hurt in the fight. They’re gone because of me.”
“It wasn’t your fault.”
Mikey said nothing. The time passed slowly. Neither said a word, but Mikey was content with that, and eventually Mikey fell asleep again, his head resting on Amy’s shoulder. She let him stay like that for a little while, he seemed peaceful. And if she were being honest she’d dreamt of a moment similar to this for years. As she watched the sun begin to rise she gently tipped Mikey’s head back and crawled off the car, going back inside. She stopped by Gerard when she walked inside. “He thinks you blame him. I know you said you didn’t, but he doesn’t believe you. Its killing him. He needs to know you don’t blame him.”
“Its not that easy.” Gerard whispered.
Amy shook her head disappointedly. “I used to admire you,” she whispered before she walked away and found a spot on the floor next to Rory to fall asleep.
Gerard was left staring out the window at his baby brother, sleeping on his car. Everything was so different now, and Gerard just wanted things to go back to the way they were. He wanted to see his brother smile, or at least the faint hints of a smile Mikey used to have. When they first finished touring for The Black Parade he just wanted it to be over. He wanted to quit, go back to his comics, be done with it forever. Now though, he longed for those days. They seemed simpler.
They stayed there for three more days. Barely anyone spoke, and when they did it usually ended in fighting. The one time Gerard slept, he woke screaming for his daughter. No one said a word about it though.
After three days of nothing but silence or fighting, Gerard had enough. “We have to go. Now. I can’t just sit here and do nothing. Pack up, we’re going to find Grace.”
“Are you crazy,” Mikey asked. “I mean really have you lost your mind?”
“I can’t sit here doing nothing. The longer she’s with them-”
“And what exactly do you want us to do Gerard,” Mikey asked. No one else said a word. It was rare that the Way brothers fought, but everyone knew by now not to get in the middle of it. “You want us to go in there? Storm the castle? With what? Half-assed guns and even worse off bodies? Frank’s in so much pain he can barely stand! Ray can’t see! We need to take time to-”
“We don’t have any fucking time Mikey!”
“You know what happened last time! You remember what happened last time we went into Battery City without a plan?! They took your daughter, Gerard! You remember that right?”
“Of course I fucking remember you little bastard,” Gerard snapped. He crossed the room in practically one step and threw his fist into Mikey’s face.
It was at that point that both Ray and Frank jumped up. Frank stood in front of Gerard and pushed him back, as Ray did the same with Mikey. As Frank tried to push Gerard back, Gee threw another punch at his brother but instead his elbow collided with Frank’s face. Frank let go of Gerard and dropped down to his knees holding onto his face. “FUCK!”
Gerard took a step back and looked down at Frank. “I’m going after Grace. If you don’t want to come with me that’s fine. I’ll go alone.”
Rory rushed over to Frank and knelt down in front of him, taking his face in his hands gently, to make sure Gerard didn’t break the stitches. Luckily none of the stitches were broken. Frank froze as soon as Rory took a hold of his face. Images of the dream he had a few nights prior flashed in his mind and for a moment he was completely unable to think.
“Gee,” Ray said quickly as Gerard was beginning to pack up. Ray’s voice pulled Frank from his distractions and he looked up at Gerard. “We’re coming with you,” Ray told him. Gerard glanced over at Amy and the Doctor. They said nothing, but handed Amy one of the guns that had been left behind. He handed one to the Doctor but he shook his head.
“Guns aren’t… my thing.”
Gerard shrugged and tossed it towards Rory, who was still kneeling on the floor next to Frank. “Your funeral,” he said to the Doctor.
Gerard looked down at Frank and offered him a hand, pulling him to his feet, but he still didn’t apologize. Each of them grabbed their jackets. As Gerard headed for the door he stopped and looked Mikey straight in the eyes. “You can come if you want but we don’t need you.” Then he brushed passed his brother and made his way to the car.
It was like he was hit with a metal bat, right in the chest. As Amy left she took Mikey’s hand. “He didn’t mean it,” she whispered. Amy walked outside to find Rory waiting for her.
“You should stay here,” he said quickly. “I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“Rory I’ll…” Her voice trailed off and she glanced back at Mikey, who stood by himself watching them. Something told her that he shouldn’t be alone. She looked over at Rory and nodded. “Just… just be careful Rory.”
Mikey watched them walk out to the car and looked down at Amy. He waited for a moment, trying to decide if he should go or not. There was no point though. He knew he’d follow his brother. Mikey would follow Gerard to the end of the world without a second thought. He grabbed his helmet, handed it to Amy, and started his bike, following behind the Trans Am.
“Gee,” Frank asked from the back seat. “Do we have any sort of plan for this?”
Gerard glanced in the mirror back at Frank. “Get Grace out of there, and if we can, don’t get killed.”
“Good plan,” Frank said nervously. He looked at Rory who was sitting next to him, then quickly looked away. He looked at Gerard, and Ray who was sitting in the front passenger seat. It felt wrong. He knew, somewhere in his gut, he knew they were driving to their deaths. Mikey wasn’t with them. Instead these strangers were following them, and it felt wrong.
If they were going to go down, then he thought that Mikey should be there. He looked out the back window but there was nothing behind them. They left Mikey behind and now Frank was having regrets. “Gee,” he said quietly. “We should go back for-”
“He made his decision,” Gerard said icily.
“No,” Frank said quickly. “You made that decision for him… I mean, he had a point. Last time you guys tried to break someone out without a plan…”
“I know what happened.” Gerard looked through the mirror, as he had every two or three minutes, to see if anyone was following him. Hoping that his brother was following them. “Fuck,” he muttered, and pulled over. The sun was beginning to set and clouds were closing in on the city. He climbed out of the car and slammed the door behind him.
“Sorry,” Frank muttered. He attempted to climb over Rory, to get out of the car, slipping and landing on top of Rory a few times before he finally found his way out of the car. “You okay,” Frank asked.
“Waiting for Mikey,” Gerard answered reluctantly.
“Thought so.” Frank leaned against the side of the car next to Gerad. “Its just tense right now,” he told him. “He won’t be mad at you.” Gerard nodded, staring down the road behind them. “You know he’ll get over it right?” Again Gerard nodded. Then he saw a headlight over the hill and he jumped up. “Headlight, let’s go.” Gerard quickly got in the car.
Frank pulled himself up to climb back into to the car, only to successfully land straddling Rory. “Uhhh…. Sorry.” He quickly climbed off Rory and sat down between him and the Doctor as Gerard took off down the road.
Mikey and Amy followed behind the Trans Am as the sun set and rain began to fall. He caught up to his brother and followed close behind as they broke through the barrier into Battery City. His heart was racing. Amy held onto him tighter. There was a thickness in the air, something that told everyone that no one was getting out alive.
It didn’t matter though. If his brother was driving to his death, Mikey was going to be right there by his side. He was always by his brother’s side.
They didn’t stop until they were in front of the tower that was Better Living Industries. By now the rain was falling in sheets. He stopped the bike next to the car and looked down at Amy and flashed her a smile. Gerard climbed out of the car, but neither said a word to each other. However, they walked side by side towards the front door.
“I told you to stay there,” Rory said, pulling Amy to the side.
“Rory,” she said quickly. “No. I wasn’t about to let you do this on your own. I…” She looked down for a moment and shook her head. “No.”
Rory understood. He knew why she didn’t want him going by himself. She’d lost him once, regardless of whether she remembered it or not, a piece of her was broken when Rory died. She didn’t want to go through that again. Rory kissed her forehead and nodded before they turned and followed Gerard, Mikey, Frank, and Ray straight through Better Living’s front door. No one noticed the Doctor was not with them.
When the gunfire started Amy’s heart leapt. Unlike the others, Amy and Rory had no experience with this. They had no experience with real guns, with real bullets, let alone laser guns. Neither of them was prepared for this battle, and Amy couldn’t help but wonder why the Doctor seemed okay with letting them do this.
They shot their way through the guards at the door. Amy and Rory did less shooting, but they held their own, for the most part staying behind the “Killjoys”. It seemed almost too easy to find Grace though, sitting in a small room full of monitors and only a handful of Dracs, easily taken out by Frank as Ray and Mikey each watched by either entrance to the room. Grace stood as soon as she saw them and smiled as Gerard knelt down and hugged her.
Mikey glanced down at him and his heart sank. He knew the look in Gerard’s eyes as he hugged Grace. He knew his brother would give anything for the girl in his arms at that moment to be his daughter. But it wasn’t Bandit, and it broke Mikey’s heart. He spent eight years trying to find a way to make it up to Gerard. Then as he looked away from his brother his eyes caught sight of something on one of the monitor’s. “No… it can’t be,” he thought.
