Jack walked into the billiard room thinking about shooting a couple solo rounds of pool, but the table seemed to be taken. He recognized Bobby Drake, even from behind. He glanced past the mutant's shoulder at the myriad drawings that seemed vaguely hotel-shaped.

"You're not trying to map this place out, are you?" he said good-naturedly. "Because that's the quickest route to losing your sanity around here."

“I am actually,” Bobby replied, too absorbed in his own thoughts and the drawing in front of him to even register surprise at the sudden presence in the room. He made another scribbling and put the pen between his teeth, shifting down the table slightly toward the other end. It was then-as Jack entered his field of vision-that the ex-mutant seemed to notice the Captain. He clamped a hand to his chest and removed the pen from his mouth, shaking his head slightly.

“You scared the crap outta me Jack! Don’t you know you shouldn’t sneak up on a guy like that?” he exclaimed. The ex-mutant tucked the pen behind his ear again and ran a hand over the back of his head before rubbing his eyes. He’d been staring at the map for so long that he could see the lines etched into his eyelids.

Jack chuckled. "Maybe you should work someplace a little more private, then," he suggested, teasing. "Like your bathtub. Oh wait..." He grinned.

Bobby tried very hard not to be amused by the statement but couldn’t help the smile that tugged up the corners of his lips. He would have been rather amused if it had been him walking in on Jack in the bathtub after all. He rolled his eyes and waved off the comment. “I started off in my room,” he explained, “but there just wasn’t enough room to lay everything out and planning is much easier when you don’t have to sort through piles every time you have an idea ( ... )

"No you don't," Jack told him. It was a classic mistake, really, worrying so much about the little details and forgetting the whole reason you were there.

"Just focus on him, and if things go wrong with the venue or the music or the food, you can laugh about it. Don't get so wound up about the candles or the fact that you have to find the library that you forget the point of the whole exercise. If you can't find the library, just have the date wherever you end up! If they don't have pizza just because you want it, grab some finger food. If you don't get upset about some little thing going wrong, you're not going to ruin the night. Improvise. It'll be fine. I promise."

Bobby rolled his eyes, shaking his head. “And where the hell did you hear that?” he asked. The last time the prankster had ‘improvised’ on a date he’d ended up encasing a couple of people in ice and was put in jail for his own protection. He didn’t particularly want any sort of repeat. “Bad things happen when I improvise,” he informed the captain in a vague sort of way, “especially on dates.”

“Anyway, it’s not like the hotel’s all of a sudden going to deny us what we want-it’s how the place keeps us in line,” he pointed out. Ok, so it also liked to fuck with them randomly, but he could be optimistic when he wanted too.

"Yeah, that's how it works," Jack said flatly. "At any rate, I don't think drawing a floorplan is going to help, so why don't you maybe concentrate on finding the candles? They might have some in the attic." He looked at Bobby. "When is this date supposed to happen, anyway?"

“We haven’t decided on a day yet,” he answered, starting to gather together the various lists. “I was thinking maybe a couple of days from now. That should give me enough time to get together the candles and decide what kind of gift to get him.” Somehow Bobby didn’t think flowers were appropriate for a guy. He certainly wouldn’t thank anyone for a bunch of flowers.

The ex-mutant set the lists to the side where they would be safe before crumpling up the attempts at mapping out the place. What the hell had he been thinking with that plan? If Jack hadn’t come around when he did he’d probably have been found in the fetal position come morning. One way to quickly drive yourself nutty was to attempt to make sense out of this place.
