So, I would like to do a YGO cosplay this year for Halloween. Problem: I don't know how to do the pointy hair. Can anyone give me some pointers (lol, pun) on how to keep it from looking like crap? I know there's at least one of you out there that knows how to do it right.

P.S. I will give you lots of love, cuddles, and cookies. <3

cosplay, questions

Use lots of Aqua net hairspray (it's really cheap and really strong when it's dry. you can get it at wal-mart), a blowdryer, and a little bit of tacky glue. I have a Yusei wig WIP tutorial that has some tips here and there that might help: http://malindachan.deviantart.com/art/Yusei-wig-WIP-86701234

also, I suggest getting a good quality wig (not a halloween wig). I usually order my wig bases from Cosworx.com (they're good quality wigs that run at decent prices. most run in between $20-40)

if you're doing something where the spikes go straight up though (like Yami's hair), I would suggest pinning the wig to a wig head and hang it upside down somewhere while you style it (use gravity to your advantage on gravity-defying hair! XD). Also, depending on the wig, you might have to sew in some extra hair wefts for extra thickness (I had to to a little bit of this on my Yami wig)

hanging things upside down is just silly for this wig, it's not like it's as crazy as jessie from team rocket pokemon or anything.

go to cosworx.com, get a punky wig in red from sepia brand wigs. It is made of kankelon fiber and will take watered down acrylic paint/acrylic ink in alcohol very well. I tried sharpies, they didn't come out so well. I used watered down acrylic paint on mine. Also, I painted after I styled and hair sprayed the spikes in (3 cans of extra hold). And I used yellow extension hair glued (white glue)to carved foam for the bangs. Paint the matress foam yellow first incase anything shows thru. White glue also helps with the tips of your spikes to help them resist damage and separation.

I still can't believe how many people can't seem to get this wig looking half way decent. It's not even that hard compared to other anime stuff thats out there. >

*shrugs* everyone has their own methods (no particular one is the "right" way to do it)
I was just saying that hanging it upside down made things easier when I made my Yami wig.
And as for people who "can't seem to get this wig looking half way decent"....not everyone is a wig master. I have a good friend who is an amazing cosplayer, but she says she has a hard time with wigs. Just because one person thought a particular wig was easy, doesn't mean that applies to everyone else.

Wigs are not hard. What is hard is that people don't use the right supplies or equipment, and they don't spend enough time on their work. And when they make a mistake they generally do not fix it and/or go back and start all over again until they get it right. They give up or they use it in it's messed up state.

I hope everyone knows wigs are not something you should be doing the night before the con. Especially when it's a style like Yugis hair.

Save up for a good wig, start planning the costume at least three months before the con, and get the hair done first because in anime, the hair is usually the most recognizable feature of a characters design.

If you practice at it you will get better. But like any skill it doesn't automatically happen overnight. All you can do is research online and then try things out for yourself. Learning from other peoples mistakes will save you time and money but nothing makes up for personal experience.

I agree. I'm handy with a sewing machine and I'm crafty with props but I'm not confident in 'wigging' at all. It isn't that I haven't tried, either... I couldn't count on my fingers the number of tutorials I've read on wig styling, and still I feel like I have no idea how to go about doing it. I tried to put my knowledge to practice and my attempt at sharpie dying a wig bright purple turned out a grey mess. It's not that I can't follow instructions, it's that I'm a totally visual person. I think a lot of people are like me, and there's nothing wrong with that. It just makes it very difficult to see how these things are done. ): (And while practice makes perfect... we don't all have the time and money to spend making numerous wigs when we only want to make one ambitious wig for one certain costume ( ... )

That is EXACTLY what I needed! :D Thanks so much! <3

Yes, I plan on attempting Yuusei. Sadly, it probably won't turn out anywhere near as awesome as yours. But I can still try! XD

Ask vikki if she can help you out. She's the absolutely fanfuckingtastic YnYuugi from Sakuracon and this year's Otakon, and if I do actually get to go to Ota next year, I will be begging her help because I'm supposed to be YnYuugi AND I AM TAKING A LITTLE YUUGI WITH ME, SO MUST BUILD TWO WIGS. >.< (Suicide much ( ... )
