do the math

So, I've done the math.
Consider that Drexel is on a quarter system with quarters lasting 10 weeks, an extra week for finals, and 1 week break in-between quarters.
There is approximately a 1 in 6 chance that any week will be some type of exam week (midterms or finals).
Strictly speaking, this might not be true. Over the winter there is a 3-week ( Read more... )

I took summers off at Drexel and was very glad for that decision. Of course, I spent one of the summers taking courses at U-of-Chicago (also on the quarter system), so that I didn't exactly have a vacation from homework and exams... but at least I was doing something other than LIS for three months and in a different city.

I found the quarter system awkward--no time for feedback before the midterms, no time to get deeply into the subject matter before having to choose paper/project topics, not enough time between midterms and finals to do as much work on the paper/project as I wanted to do, and never enough time to thoroughly explore the subject before the class is over. Coming after TriCo's 13- and 14-week semesters with a mid-semester break week and a reading week before exams, 10-weeks-plus-exam felt so rushed!

I don't know if the 10 weeks feel *rushed* to me, but it does feel like they go by so fast! Though, that has always benefited me as the type of student who does well off-the-bat (as opposed to my brothers who take at least a few weeks to warm up to a new topic, new prof, new teaching style, etc).

I'm not exactly planning on taking the summer off completely. This year, I'm hoping to take a practicum somewhere else in Philly, as well as continuing my internship at Biomed. (There's a *slight* chance that I'll get the Fellowship I applied for and that they'll want me to graduate in September, in which case this plan goes out the window.)
