theater, work, travel

I built this theater in my basement. You know, with a projector mounted on the ceiling and stuff. It was a good amount of work, and I couldn't have done it without the help of my friends Brandon and John. It's essentially done, just a few shelves to build, yet. Eventually I'll take some pictures, but I haven't had the patience to take "good" final pictures. It's dark down there, and I'm no photographer. But I assure you, reader, that the screen looks fantastic. http://s152.photobucket.com/albums/s171/plasticus/Basement/

I went to Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago, for a conference. I learned a lot of things, but Las Vegas isn't really my kind of place. I was mostly bored when I wasn't learning. This past weekend Alex and I went to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. That was way more fun for me. We saw Leon Redbone and Leo Kottke at an opera house (a 100-some year old place that had recently been renovated -- awesome), went to a couple museums, and generally cooled out around a neat town. We've got tickets to a bunch of upcoming local events, too. We're not a crazy busy couple, but we aren't bored.

At work I'm building towards using some open source projects around the business. Slowly, one project at a time, I'm saving them money, increasing security, and NOT helping bad business. I've got an Ubuntu Linux server running a private wiki to store IT information and some ticket-tracking software, I've removed Symantec from our Macs in favor of ClamAV, and I'm working on a project involving eGroupWare as an alternative to Microsoft Sharepoint (which will save money hand over fist). This week is pretty nuts at work because we're all preparing for our big assembly, which is Thursday and Friday. I have to take a bunch of computers up to Ames and get them set up, and I'm responsible for tallying up the votes for our new president and vice president. I'll be sending 500ish voting cards through a scanner, and giving the data file to my cohort in IT, who will run them through his crazy SQL business. It's slightly less exciting than it sounds.

My brother's getting a divorce, which is pretty sad for his daughter. He might come live with me until his house sells and he can get back on his feet -- there's no shortage of room in this house. I think Barack Obama is the most exciting political candidate I've ever seen, and Hillary Clinton is frightening. I watch and read way too much political news, lately. We've lost a few sugar gliders, and we're down to two -- a boy and a girl. We treated them well while they were alive, and had fun with them. Blah blah blah, sometimes things happen that are sad, but life is pretty awesome overall.

I'm pretty pleased with where I'm at right now.
