Fluffy is continuing to have poop problems and I don't think it's going to get any better. He's been to the vet twice this month, and they diagnosed him with megacolon. He's probably going to have to be on medications his entire life, and may even need surgery down the road. He's so young too, it's just not fair. I'm very upset about this. I can't ( Read more... )

Awww Julia, I'm sorry :(
I know you're not a fan of the cisipride idea, but if it will improve his quality of life and not have you back every other week for a sedated enema, it's probably the way to go. I talked to Dr. Brongo about possible side effects, and she said for a while they thought that there were some in humans that were taking it, but they proved to be minor and not really of concern. She said you shouldn't have to worry about anything by putting Fluffy on it. Also, there's a pharmacy called Belvidere that will flavor the medication like tuna or chicken or even put it into treat form so you're not struggling to administer medication every day.
And Ellen is right, I'm sure Fluffy's megacolon has nothing to do with your care. It's most likely genetic, especially if Kuku's starting to have problems as well. Pet insurance can be helpful but they won't cover a pet with a pre-existing condition. Perhaps a possibility for your other cats?
And as far as euthanasia, the thing to think of is quality of life. If an animal no longer has that, it should be a consideration. It's a gift that we a humans can't be given, but a gift that we can give our animals to alleviate their suffering. BUT! Try not to think about it. He is a young cat and there are options (ask about CareCredit!) and I'm sure surgery could help as well. If it's something you're considering, we have the Angel Fund at my job which is to help people who can't afford treatment for your pets. At least let whoever your technician is know that you're strapped for cash, and request Dr. Brongo! Keep it on the DL but she's got the biggest heart and is more willing to help people who can't afford treatment, even if it's just with setting up a payment plan.
Good luck Julia, let me know if I can help you in any way!
