Today at my job a guy comes in that I haven't met before. So I say hello and ask how he's doing. Now this guy is probably in his late 50's. He's got a gray beard and gray hair, fairly tall. He doesn't reply he just walks over and grabs a chair then scoots it near me. He sits down and starts talking. This is what says in response to my how are you doing:
"Well three weeks ago I went on vacation for a week. I was driving to Seattle for my son's wedding. Well on the way there me and my wife are in a car accident. It totals our car so we have to get a rental to finish out the trip. By the time we arrive we've missed the wedding and my son and his bride are gone on their honeymoon. We're standing at the church and my wife's cell phone rings. She got word that her Mother wasn't doing very well and they wanted to us to get to Minnesota as soon as possible. So we drive across the country and get there in time for them to put her on hospice care. They think she'll live another month or two but she'll be dead soon. We stayed as long as we could but I knew my vacation time was running out and so was my wife's. So we had to leave her mother lying there on hospice, dying, all alone. On the way home we get wind that my cousin passed away earlier in the week and he was having a funeral the next day. Me and him had been very close growing up. I knew we couldn't make it but we tried. I drove for an entire day to get back home. That's when I realized it was the one year anniversary of my youngest son's death. He died last year in a car wreck. He was only twenty three years old. It takes something out of a man when he sees his youngest son lying in a coffin and knowing he's never going to wake up. My life has been a wreck since then. But how the heck are you doing?"
I am not making that up. I may be paraphrasing some but that is what the man said to me, almost without taking a breathe. It really saddened me that this guy had to go through so much but boy did I get what I asked for on that one.
I'm tired and I'm going to bed now. Hope you had a good Thursday. Remember that tomorrow is... TGIF, Thank God It's Friday! Yeah!!!
