the first snowflakes of this storm

There's a poem to be written from that subject line, but I don't have it yet. If you find it please let me know?

You've probably heard about the cold front that is sweeping across the country. Temperatures were in the mid-40s here for most of today and it's been raining steadily. But over the next few hours the temperature will drop 25 degrees1. It will drop another 20 degrees by morning, and hover around zero degrees for the next day. The steady rain will become steady snow and sleet.

Before the rains started I returned the books to the library that are due back in the next few days. And since I was overdue for a major shopping trip, I went to two different stores and bought groceries. Now my food stores make me happy.

I have:
Apples2 & arugula
Broccoli & brussel sprouts (but not beets)
Cabbage & collard greens
Carrots & clementines
Ginger root
Lemons, limes
Parsley
Scallions, shallots, & sweet onions
Sweet potatoes & squash
Turnips

For protein I have canned tuna, fresh catfish, & chicken thighs. There's a bit of stew beef and a small wedge of cheese. Also dried lentils, split peas, blackeyed peas, black beans, and great northern beans.

The stores were out of many things, more than I expected. One store was out of celery. Who runs out of celery?

Tonight I was tired and ate bits of this and that, with arugula salad. Tomorrow I will cook up the catfish, possibly with greens. I've never cooked catfish before. Left to my own devices I will do a simple pan fry. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to cook catfish?

I will also make a chicken & lentil stew, and some sort of bean soup. Mmmm, bean soup. What sort of soup(s) do you like?

And I stood in the aisle and waffled about it, but in the end I also bought flour and sugar and molasses. I eat very little wheat these days, and very few sweets, but it is winter and I have not yet made my favorite molasses spice cookies. They will be very tasty on a cold winter's day, and the gas stove & oven are actually the most energy efficient way to heat the kitchen. Even more so if it's doing something productive, like baking cookies.

I know many of you cook. Tell me a dish you've made that you loved? It doesn't need to be The Best Thing Ever3, just something that brought you joy in that day, for whatever reason.

__________
1. Indeed it's already down to 34 degrees, and the first snowflakes of this storm are falling.
2. Pink Lady and Honey Crisp, which are my current favorites, plus a lone Pinata, because I've never tried that varietal.
3. Though it certainly can be.
