Thursday was my 30th birthday. A friend at work knows I'm not into birthdays, so he felt the need to embarass me by making sure I was the center of attention. A card went around and a monstously delicious carrot cake was brought in. It was yum filled, with yum icing, and had crumbled yum along the edges. It was, in a word, good.
This however seeded the idea in some people's minds that my aversion to the birthday was because I was turning 30. So let me set the record straight: I'm not into birthdays for the same reason I'm not into days like Valentine's Day and Earth Day. Meaning: don't set aside just one day to celebrate a person or idea. If you want to save the planet, do it every day. If you want to let someone know you like them, always let them know. A sanctioned holiday cheapens the effect.
I did get a laugh in, though. This time of year is Kaplan Exodus Time, when people tend to move on to other jobs. We lost two from our department in the last week. So when cake was brought out and people were standing around, I began my speech with "Thank you, thank you all. It's been really great working with all of you these past five years..."
