Kolkata was good. Well, the meetings/workshops went well, didn't actually see much of the city. Think I made it out of the hotel twice?
One of those occasions was because one of the local Prof's invited us to dinner at his place (actually the building of one of his sons). They appeared to be a bit of a dynasty, with the Prof's family now owning several of the neighbouring buildings. The building he actually lived in, a couple of buildings away, had been in the family for 300 years!
Our hotel (where we also had the workshops) was out in a 'new' suburb, built in the 80s. A mix of new and western buildings, but with some interestingly dilapidated and even abandoned buildings being reclaimed by tropical vegetation. Also a rather western mall, which I think was actually quite new (a few years old) but had a kinda 80s maybe 90s feel about it.
Slight jet lag during trip, kept waking up at 4-5am, even first night when was quite tired after getting in at 2am. Managed to function, but then trip home was a bit excruciating. A full last day of 2nd workshop, went overtime (not much, maybe 5:45pm? But had been attempting to finish early!), then had to wait around till flight out at 2am. First leg was too short (2.5 hrs) to try and nap, and then when we left Bangkok (8am) for proper 9 hr leg home, it was daytime... (and there was a very large and kind of boisterous sports team, many of whom I think were on their first flight).
Curry for breakfast, lunch and dinner was cool ;-)
