OpenOffice 2.0 unleashed

OpenOffice.org is a multi-platform and multilingual office suite and an open-source software project. It is compatible with all other major office suites, is free to download, use, and distribute. This evening I downloaded the newly released OpenOffice.org (version 2.0.0 RC).

I got it running with a quiet install using the command line install setup.exe /qn  This installation feature will enable me to schedule a silent install around the college with minimal interruption using a Novell Zenworks object and some other OpenOffice installation magic that I dug up. Isn't it nice when you can dig out these parameters by just running setup.exe /?  I look forward to giving this a solid workout at our college as it seems to be the only way we can handle the issues of authoring in both Open Document format and Khmer language.

Some readers might be surprised that this will benefit our Cambodian students who are continually frustrated that they cannot easily type in their native language without clunky patches or hacks. The Khmer OpenOffice development team has a vision of a country where Cambodians can learn and use computers in their own language. A country that does not have to change to a new language in order to use computers. Doubly nice if we can get everything working with the OpenOffice.org software.

Over the weekend, I was pleasantly surprised that a close ICT friend, Andrew had already been using OpenOffice.org for several months on his home computer. He described that the change over was relatively easy and didn't think any more of it since he removed his old MS Office suite software.

Time for me to test the waters too.. we have nothing to loose and everything to gain.
